Apps grinding tonight

Unread post by firemoose » Thu Aug 29, 2013 10:47 pm

So far most of our NFL players are doing all they can do to make a statement and their case for making their teams. AE, Cadet, and Martin did not play and Hunter was only in for a series. AE (should be but with the Panthers you never know), Martin, Hunter, and Kilgore are locks to make their teams but AE didn't help himself in the fight for the #3 WR spot. He's going to have to take it during the regular season. My guess is that BAMF will rotate #'s 3, 4, 5 and maybe 6 (if active) in for a few games until someone wins it.

No one seems to know why Cadet didn't travel to Miami tonight, not even the Saints announcers. I'm looking for info and will post some if I find it.

As far as our bubble players go the stats are listed below. As of right now all games involving App players are finals except SF vs SD and Oak vs Sea, both of which are at the half. I'll post DJ's stat line from the first half and update it if anything changes. Keep in mind these stats aren't perfect as CBSSportsline and ESPN have been lax with the preseason stats so if anything our guys have a little better than what's listed below.

Offense:
S Miller 12/72 LG 34 KR-3/28.7 LG 34 PR-3/1.3 LG 7
B Quick 5/60 LG 26 1 Fum 1 Lst

Defense:
D Presley 6-0 1 INT
D McCray 4-1 1 Sack
C Lynch 3-1
J Fletcher 3-1
D Smith 6-0 (half)

Wanted to start by saying that I didn't mean to put Quick in the "bubble player" catagory. Fisher loves him and he will make the Rams roster. He continues to improve and I believe he'll get more playing time as the season goes on.

The stat lines finished up pretty much as shown. Again not sure they are exact as the lines haven't been updated this preseason quite as close as they usually are in the regular season but, if anything, they are under the true stats, not over.

DJ Smith started the game for SD. Good sign as both San Fran and San D used mostly starters for the first two series. Most of the San D message boards and twitter posts are saying he's got the D mostly down now and he'll be in for running downs, at least, come Sunday.

Not feeling as good about Cadet. The guy he's fighting with, Khiry Robinson, had a big night for the Saints. Unless it was another Armanti situation (most reports are that Rivera told AE he was on the team and to rest the hamstring. Again he didn't help win the #3 spot but better to rest the injury and win it in practice and games than to risk making it worse and maybe miss most of the season) then I think Travaris could be in a bad place. Even the beat reporters for the Saints are saying that Peyton said he didn't make the trip but would not say why. Throw in the fact that it was his hometown they were playing in and it doesn't bode well.

Last night was either an audition for Robinson so he could be picked up by another team or last week was Cadet's last in a Saint's uniform (Robinson could still be put on the Saints practice squad {TC can't} but the way he's looked in preseason I wouldn't expect him to last on it). Even if he's cut there appears to be plenty of interest in him from other teams and I would expect he'll be picked up.

For the rest of our guys they did the best they could and time will tell who did enough.

I'm going to post this directly from the NFL site as it would take me an hour to type all the different rules.
Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on its "practice squad" in addition to the 53-member main roster. They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, he is eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment, or have no prior accrued seasons in the NFL (an accrued season is six or more games on the active roster); or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience on a club's 53-man active roster. If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their "only Accrued Season(s)", he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad. Games in which a player is listed as the third-string quarterback (a designation that has been abolished as of 2011) do not count as being on the active list.
This is slightly different than it used to be before the new CBA. I'm going to have to go back and check how many games Travaris was active last year. I believe it was at least 7 or 8 games because he was doing the returns for most of the second half of the season. Under the old rules that would have made him ineligible. I'll double check that and see.

Found this on the Packers site.
Eligibility for players in their first or second year in the NFL:

Players who do not have an accrued season in the NFL (in other words, rookies are automatically eligible).
Players with one year NFL experience who were active for less that nine regular season games.
Cadet was on the active squad for 13 games last year, according to the Saints' site. By this he's not eligible.

Moose another good job. Our guys for the most part stepped up.For most of them its a matter of who's in front of them on the depth chart. So lets take a stab at who makes it: locks are Martiin, BQ, Hunter,Kilgore and AE. The probable category: DJ Smith and Cory Lynch. The on the bubble group: Pressley, McCray. Fletcher, Miller. Very disappointed with the beat writers for the Lions. They were all about Steven going into the game. Then Steven performs by being the leading rusher 12-72 (long of 34) had 3 kickoffs avg, 28.5 long of 34. and in four articles post game by two writers....no mention that he was the leading rusher avg 6.0/carry totaling over 160 yds of total offense. Cadet is unknown. Thought he was a lock two games ago. Robinson made it easier to let him go. Feel good tho that he'll get picked up by somebody if it happens,

Thanks 11.

As I said above Quick is in. And based on what I've been finding on the net DJ is in. I would be surprised if Corey doesn't make it from the coaches comments and the fact that the Titans are short at safety (unless they pick up a cut player), and I think McCray will make it on. The Jags coaches are pretty high on him. I also think DP and SM both have a good chance to make their Practice Squads if not the 53, again based on the posts I'm seeing. It really depends on how much Special Teams value the coaches see in them. That's what it will come down to with them. Fletcher is a big unknown as I'm not seeing a lot of posts about him and I've already said what I think about TC. These four are the closest to the bubble right now. It could go either way with all of them. Of them all Travaris, should he be cut, will be the first to be picked up. And if Dre and Steven get put on their PS's I think someone might poach one of them, depending on need.

This is pure speculation but it's based on what I'm seeing on the web. All could change for the non locks if their teams see someone cut that they want. Either way we'll know something by 6pm tomorrow.
