That game had so many reasons that piled up that you can’t say any one reason did it, but it was certainly a contributing factor. Those guys were so geeked up about having us walk in there as the first Top 25 team to visit Paulson, and well, it being us, just made them drool.

Exactly. If I'm Drink I'm begging voters behind closed doors not to rank us until after the SBC title game if possible. All that matters is we finish there and right now we are too green in this regard to not expect some players to be so geeked up about it. I sincerely hope these teams ahead of us don't lose for a while and we keep winning. If we beat the Gamecocks and are undefeated at that point we will definitely be ranked but the last thing we need is to get caught up in that press.

I imagine Drink won't even talk about it in meetings. He understands this stuff means nothing at this point in the season. We have bigger goals than just getting in the rankings.

I guess this is my point (and I'll admit I may be wrong). If there is no G5 team in the final AP poll and we win the Sunbelt and finish with the most votes outside the top 25, do we get the auto NY6 bid?

I'm not sure what the process is if no G5 team is ranked. I'd imagine that the committee would "select" someone, but that's a total guess.

If we lose any game at all we can forget this anyway. This is good debate if we are undefeated after the SBC title game. As for the rule, I think a G5 has to be top rated G5 team in the CFP rankings and may have to be in top 15?

What award do we get for being ranked at the end of the year? I'll take the recognition we receive for being ranked during the season over being ranked at the end of the year. Constantly seeing App State scroll along the top 25 ticker every week is a good step to bringing more national attention to our football program. That's what will get us in the serious conversations of getting to the NY6 game. If we are a top 25 team, we need to learn to play with a ranking.

Getting a ranking isn't the goal, it's the product of reaching our goals. We are starting to check off those goals as the season rolls along and have no control over when the ranking comes. As fans, it's fun to speculate when that might happen. I'm sure the coach and players are staying focused on our stated goals - "...win the Sun Belt Conference championship and a bowl game with class, integrity and academic excellence." Let the fans focus on the unstated "goal" - #rankAppState!

I could give two turds what our ranking is on Oct.31. This is a revenge game; retribution. Of all the games on the schedule I'm of the opinion our guys have this one circled. I was hyped for UNC I will be hyped for all of our games but if you told me App could only win one game this year the Stink game is the one. We hate them, they hate us. But I digress; let's blow the dag on doors(trying to curb the language but I'm fired up) off Coastal and remind everyone that the SBC runs through Boone!!!!

I am not going to get hyped up on a top 25 ranking, I did last year and the thrill didn't last long. NY6 also would be unbelievable but I for one am not booking a flight. Let the guys keep winning out and improving each week. Lets keep an underdog mentality with something to prove always and all this will happen.

Actually, the more we talk about being ranked, or receiving votes and being close to the Top 25, the better. We need as much good PR as you can get. Combine that with wins and accomplishing our goals, we set ourselves up for a good ranking and NY6 bid. If we go undefeated and don’t get talked about or don’t sniff the 25-35 “rank”, we have zero chance of being relevant.

Agreed, when the Stink comes to town I don't only want to win but kick a mud hole in their ass. I'm sure our players feel the same way. My point is, it would be ironic to be ranked #25 once they roll into town, just like last season. And, I'll guarantee ya it's going to end much differently this time.

Not that any of us posting on a stupid message board have any influence over it anyway but don't y'all think that potential recruits would be interested in our being ranked? I want to be ranked, and I mean AP Top 25, as soon and as long as possible.
I've never recruited a single football player but I would think that that would be a powerful thing to talk about with a High School Senior as we move through the season. The championship won't be decided until right before the first signing day so why not want something to get kids' interests? Again, not that this board has any influence over our ranking.

I truly believe in my heart of hearts the Iceman (ZT) is going to have some extra juice for that game! But I'm hoping he puts everyone on notice tomorrow about what's going down this year! I love the one game at a time approach from our guys and I believe tomorrow will be the best barometer of what our team is. I know for a FACT Coastal is going to bring it. I also believe the rest of the conference believes that this is the year to knock us off due to the coaching change. I want to see all three phases shut that crap down tomorrow! Our offense is too explosive to be held in check for 4 quarters, our DEFENSE has too many quality reps under their belts and just some bad dudes with bad intentions to not play lights out D, oh and our special teams is most certainly special and I fully expect them to positively impact this game tomorrow! Again I'm juiced up and have been since I saw the unis, Coastal is coming; so let's knock their block off!!!!!

Did I read that we played 26 different guys on defense last week? If so, I imagine it was because of the injuries and cramping. Just thinking that a lot of guys got some live game reps which should pay off down the road.

Here's something else to care about regarding our getting (and staying) ranked. There's an opening in the AAC coming up. I would think that if we're able to get in, and stay in, the Top 25 then that'd carry some weight and might get the attention of the AAC commissioner to at least give us serious consideration. Joining the AAC would propel us forward big time. We fit their footprint way better than Boise, BYU, or even Army.
We need Kerns to turn basketball around though, that could potentially hold us back.

Sitting at 32 in the AP and a potential win on Saturday, below are some of the opportunities that may allow us to move up:

Wake Forest is 26 and at Boston College.
#24 Kansas State is at Oklahoma State who is 27.

I don't see SMU losing to USF, Iowa State losing to Baylor, #25 Michigan State losing to Indiana, #23 Texas A&M losing to Arkansas, or #22 UCF losing to UConn, but if any of those happened we would certainly move up.

I think Army is on a bye.

What does this mean? I don't get how we are "ranked" 32 in a top 25 poll. I really don't. To me, you are either ranked or you're not. We are not. This makes me wonder how close to pregnant my wife is, because being ranked is like being pregnant: you either are or you're not. I just don't get it.

No sir ...you're understanding of rankings is waaaaay off. Your not ranked or not ranked. South Alabama and Miami are not the same because they are not ranked. Nor are Clemson and Boise State the same because they are ranked. That ranking comes from number of received votes. We are 32nd in that voting. This thread quite accurately explains things we need to happen to be ranked. It's very normal to speculate when you will be ranked in the top 25.

So our first daughter and my wife's pregnancy was like being ranked in one poll but not both but when we had twins a few years after our first and that would be like being ranked in both the AP and Coaches Poll. I am trying to catch up on the pregnancy simile.
