2016 Softball: Recruiting

Unread post by firemoose » Wed Nov 11, 2015 10:21 pm

Guess I'm losing it considering I went back all the way to June 2014 3 times and didn't see it. Looks like it's time for a visit to the eye doc.....

Softball really had a huge leap from SoCon to SB. Recruiting has to be brutal. We really do not have great facilities compared to the people we are competing with. I have seen HS facilities that are comparable.

This is from the other thread. Both have signed their NLI's.

From internet reports App has picked up two 2016 commits (along with a 2015 commit I placed in another thread). All three play for the North Carolina Challengers Team. I am placing below their MaxPreps profiles, a roster page for the Challengers what lists all three as App commits, and a skills video I found for White.

IF Keri White of Topsail High School in Hampstead, NC
IF/OF Laura Sales of Heritage High School in Wake Forest, NC

Same as the last. NLI signed.

From twitter reports P Carson Pace of North Davidson High School in Lexington, NC committed to App back on the 22nd. I'm linking her MaxPreps profile to this post. Not a ton of info but as usual I'll revisit these as the time passes and update as things become available. North Davidson is a powerhouse softball team that went 30-2 last season and had the #2 ranking in the state overall. Ms. Pace put in a lot of work from newspaper reports I saw. Our new coach is really hitting the recruiting trail hard and picking up both 2015 and 2016 commits.

Moose,

My question is this, are any of these folks going to bring us up to SBC level in softball? And how does the new coach compare from a recruiting standpoint to those we have had in the past?

Guess that would be a hard one to answer until they hit the field. Coach Savage seems very happy on twitter and given that nine of the sixteen commits are all teammates on the Challengers roster and have played together for some time that can only help the chemistry. But the real question is do we really know if any player in any sport is going to make the transition to college and be successful? You do your best to take the players you expect to help and then it's a wait and see if they really do. Unfortunately there aren't any guarantees in any sport.

True enough. Does softball have a star system like football recruiting? How is the new coach doing compared to others we have had with regard to landing highly touted recruits?

There are a couple of sites that have some ratings but no where near the number and content of the football/basketball/baseball sites out there. Most sites just give the basics and that's why, unless I find more information when I search a player, I usually just go with MaxPreps since most are listed there. Very few show up on the other ones but I check them all anyway. It's a long process and I wish there was as much info as the football type sites. These ones I'm posting I was looking up until 3 this morning. I've only got one more to list before I have to start searching the others. You'll see the time between posts increase a ton in a few minutes... ;)

As far as our staff, they seem to be bringing in, at the very least, a lot players that know each other and have played together as teammates. Just that familiarity can make a team better even if not all player are stars. We'll know in a couple of years but things are looking pretty good, at least from the recruiting standpoint.

In college softball, having one dominant pitcher and a power hitter can turn a team around since the softball pitching motion is a natural arm motion (baseball isn't).

Last season, the ladies probably has their best non-conference ever but the Sun Belt is a power conference in the sport.
