Soccer: Landon Donovan Strikes Euro Futbol Again
Donovan goal gives MLS 2-1 win over Bayern Munich

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Landon Donovan celebrated the winning goal in his 14th All-Star game by grasping the MLS badge on his jersey before he was swarmed by his teammates.
Donovan dribbled the ball at the top of the box before blasting it past German World Cup goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the 70th minute, giving the MLS All-Stars a 2-1 victory over the Bundesliga champions on Wednesday night.
"I'm proud to be a part of this league," Donovan said. "For many years, those of us that were in this league were sort of looked down upon for staying here and playing here.
"This was a big moment for our league.

Congrats Donovan. You can dominate MLS, but were just average in Europe. You can also score against a Bayern team that was half assing that game

I just read that Donovan is retiring after the season. I am sure he'll join Alexi Lalas going into commentating/analysis. I don't really follow soccer, except during the World Cup, is there a reason so many US fans seem to dislike the guy?mtnjax wrote:Congrats Donovan. I like him and appreciate the passion. He's dead on with his comments.

By definition, average means that there are equal number of players better than him and worse than him. Therefore your statement indicates that he performed better than half of the players in Europe. That is a terrific accomplishment for the limited amount of time that he spent there.mtnjax wrote:Congrats Donovan. You can dominate MLS, but were just average in Europe. His goal last night was well taken but the pass from Valeri was amazing.

Well, now that you mention it, there are a couple of huge reasons. It's always been "all about Landon" with him. His head is bigger than the door and his selfishness is known world-wide. Case in point...ASUMountaineer wrote:I just read that Donovan is retiring after the season. I am sure he'll join Alexi Lalas going into commentating/analysis. He's probably the most skilled US player in history, but with a few too many character flaws ...

Bob Levy
"What I'll remember about Landon Donovan, more than the goals and the on-field moments, is a cold night in Newtown, CT, just 4 weeks after hell visited that small town. The first town wide event for kids was a "Soccer Night in Newtown", organized by Houston's Chis Canetti, and many of the game's stars flew in. In Landon's case, that meant clear across the country. And, with many of the other names of the beautiful game, he spent 4 or 5 hours there - patiently visiting with kids, signing every autograph, posing for each picture, answering every question - down to - 'what's your favorite pizza', and, 'what super hero powers do you want'? There were media members on hand that night, but they respectfully kept their distance from these moments and conversations. Countless youngsters had a few moments of fun, a smile, a picture, a good memory, after several weeks of a cruel reality beyond comprehension. This was just several weeks before Landon's fabled 'hiatus' from the game, including the time in Cambodia. On this cold New England night, he was - with many of his colleagues in the game - the Man of the Match - for something bigger than the game."

Re: Soccer: Landon Donovan Strikes Euro Futbol Again
A perfectly natural human reaction given the circumstances. The headline is also a bit misleading. He felt that way briefly and ..."Then the next day I woke up and said to myself, that's a really crappy way to feel," Donovan told the LATimes. "That's a bad way to live your life, it doesn't help me, it doesn't help the team, it doesn't help the energy that the team needs."asu66 wrote:Well, now that you mention it, there are a couple of huge reasons. You made my point with the fox article.... He has always been an ambassador for US Soccer....
His reaction and comments were honest and real. IF you watched the World Cup his commentary was very complementary, even when Klinsman made some strange sub moves.

Re: Soccer: Landon Donovan Strikes Euro Futbol Again
Interesting takes, thanks guys. As a kid, I played and followed soccer. As I grew older, I stopped playing and following soccer. Now, I'm trying to get back into it, so given the news of Donovan, I was interested in hearing about him because he, arguably, the US' biggest soccer name--maybe Dempsey now. Anyways, thanks for the info!

If you tell how you really feel about anything, someone will get mad. I think almost anyone would have had the same feelings being cut from a team before its entry on its largest stage, but many would have just said "It's the coach's decision and I respect that".
I don't know which is better.
