I can't remember on which board that I read the discussion, but these Oak Ridge guys haven't really panned out.

I graduated from ORMA in 1999, where I spent all of my high school years. It was a really unique experience, and a good one. One of the issues ORMA has always had was choosing which of the three main divisions of the academy (Academics, Athletics, Military) was going to get the most attention. Athletics always came a distant last, so I was excited when it seemed that they were putting emphasis on it for once. That's not to say that it should ever be the most important but it deserved attention, in my opinion. Clearly, this was a mistake and has garnered very little attention outside that of the negative nature. I'm glad the experiment has ended, but I'm sorry/embarrassed that it lives on in Boone.

I know how I'd feel if I had an ORMA diploma on my wall; but it's not really on Oak Ridge as much as it's on the individuals. Presumably, they've been taught right from wrong somewhere in life. They just seem to believe that their bad choices should be overlooked. To Capel's credit, he has not done that. It would have been easy for him to sweep the latest events under the rug and let it be someone else's problem. I admire him for his grit. That will serve him well in the future.

One mystery yet to unfold is whether Jacob Lawson, Canty's and Neal's ORMA sidekick, has managed to trod a straight and true path through the misdeeds of others. Lawson is/was considered to be the missing piece of Capel's basketball puzzle.

One has to wonder what Matt McMahon must be thinking about now. He has to be one of the prospects on Charlie Cobb's "short list." It is known that Matt still has contact with his "ASU family." It is also known that Matt recruited Lawson, Canty and Neal for ASU when they were high school sophomores and juniors. Houston Fancher would have signed all three if things had worked out differently.

Matt has to be wondering how it might work for him to have all three on his 2014-15 team if he were to be offered the ASU job; and if he accepted it.

How many times have these guys been suspended and/or been in legal trouble? And how many strikes does one get before being kicked off the team?

It has been a brief year for Canty. First, he was academically ineligible (and apparently in some legal trouble as well), then he was injured, and now, this. One wonders if he will even be on the team at season's end or a part of next year's group. Neal, of course, missed half of last season academically ineligible. One also has to wonder if Jason Capel will be glad to relieved of the headache that coaching this team has become.

While initially I was not able to attend the SoCon tourney, my schedule conflict has disappeared and I have decided to head to Asheville next week. My expectations are low and, quite frankly, I'm going as much for history sake as anything else. I was in attendance at ASU's first SoCon tournament appearance in 1972 and was there for our first SoCon tourney championship in 1979. So, it seems fitting to make it to see our last appearance. My first SoCon tourney experience in 1972 saw ASU enter as an 8th seed matched with #1 Davidson in Greenville. The Apps played a great game in Bob Light's last game, ASU falling by 5, 82-77. The Apps won their first tournament crown in Roanoke besting Furman 86-83 in 1979 under Bobby Cremins. Living just 20 miles from the Star City it was a real treat to win it with a number of my Hokie friends in attendance. So, history bekons me to Asheville for this final trip. Interesting that in our first year we were seeded 8th and in our last tourney we could as well.

Of course it wasn't the SoCon but the Carolinas Conf - but do you remember ever going to the Lexington YMCA for the tourney? ---

I went to one tourney there. A JuCo transfer forward from Ohio named Gary Chenevy helped Coach Light and the Apps to win the title. Methinks it was in '67.

Davis was there from 70-74. He lead the team in scoring in his three varsity seasons.

Stanley Davis played from 70-74. He's unquestionably the best PG in ASU history. He could do it all and make it look easy--with that infectious smile on his face at all times. Often wonder where he is these days. I need to talk with Coach Light before it's too late.

Stan was deceptively quick! Those "bow-legs" hid an uncanny ability to get open for his quick release.

Let's not leave out Appalachian's Wayne Duncan and Jim Richardson and two-sport Duke flunky Buckey "The Catawba Claw" Pope. I don't remember his name, but L-R had a rough & tough, balding 6'8 forward who looked to be 30 years old or older. Several years after he'd played four years for Da Bears, the story was told in the Hickory area that he'd played four years at Montana and three or four for a semi-pro team in Poland or Czechoslovakia. The NAIA's rules enforcement was apparently a little lacking.
