say what you want but unless we get a veteran coach who doesn't wanna jump around from school to school a la buck fuzz, we're gonna be a mediocre at best for some time to come. players want stability...they dont wanna be coached by an up and comer who promises them the sky and then bolts...a la buck fuzz...get a guy who can win and knows the game and knows recruiting. a coach like that can be more cynical to bball politics and can focus on changing the course of app basketball. if you want a fanbase...you gotta win...if you want a good coach...you gotta hit the hip. if you want loyalty...go with a guy whos been around the block and wants to stir some things up. whats gabe kaplin doing? i say go to any bball prep school and offer 5 guys all at once to start like the fab five...hell...itll get some press at least.

Normally I would agree with that, but in the state that we are in right now, if we could get someone that could jump start the team and we knew that he would go after 2-3 years, it could get us going and allow us to get a good long term coach.

At the personal level, one has to feel for our players and coaches. It can't be fun or easy to take the court on game night any more. The players are obviously demoralized and have forgotten how to win. At least, Capel has that $158,000 salary to fall back on. Even though it's relatively low for the profession he's in, it's in no way chump change. For comparison, Eddie Biedenbach (All-American, All-ACC, former ass't coach at NC State and former head coach at Davidson) was making only $100,000 after 18 seasons at UNC-A. Can everyone fathom that? After 18 seasons! $100 large? Unreal.

Betcha we're all glad our team isn't playing Asheville this season. We'd get our clock cleaned.

Our kids and fans have a loooong month and a half to go before there's some real hope on the horizon. On the downside, we have to temper that with the knowledge that Charlie Cobb will once again lead the search for a basketball coach. We also know Capel will drive away from HCC for the last time leaving his team's APR in the toilet. It's going to take some skilled leadership to get this train back on the track.

I think any coach, at any level that has made a turnaround, for any reason should be give a chance, unless we have a known product that really wants to come here.

I don't care if they were a former player, assistant coach, whatever...I would take a coach that went into a failing situation and turned it around and kept it good for a few years. Yes it could have been just by chance that it happened, since HS, etc don't recruit, but still I think we need a turnaround guy with a proven record as a head coach. The more he wants to be a APP the better. Because in the end the best recruiter we have is our record.

Two guys on my wish list, Mike Rhoades at VCU and Dane Fife at Mich State, have small school HC experience. Rhoades took over Randolph Macon from legendary Hal Nunnaly and was a coach of the year in his conference and in the state. Fife took over IPFW and led them from Independent status to a new league, the Summit, and posted better seasons each year. Don't know if we could afford either, but both were thrown in the fire at very young ages and are now assistants at high level schools that focus on defense. If we can't recruit great shooters,great defense can atone for much of that.
