Nice crowd? I was there too. It has been years since ASU had a crowd into a game like that. ETSU was 17-2, ranked 16th in the nation and had just beat Memphis 2 days before. They had beaten NC State earlier. App was without Sr point guard Rodney Peel and started 2 freshmen, one a point guard going up against arguable the best PG to ever play in the SoCon. We has some great games with ETSU back then. The point is it was a game that meant something to the students and fans. That Apke team would run rough shod through the So Con today.

Ed Ward was a sr, Tim Powers a jr - graduated, Steve Spurlock a jr - played his sr year but don't know if he graduated, Billy Ross a so - graduated, Joey Sabato was a so - graduated, Ricky Nedd was a fr - graduated, Jeff Williams was fr - graduated, Rodney Peel came back for his sr year.

Great crowd, lots of excitement, fun to watch a bit of that game.

But, I think we'd see a bigger louder crowd in Holmes if we were playing a SoCon rival (or probably any team) that was ranked in the top 20. Even in this current lack-luster year, if Davidson or Charleston or Georgia Southern came up to Boone ranked No. 16, Holmes would be rocking. (Remember when Steph Curry played in Holmes and the place was sold out.)

And about that video of the ETSU game: ASU got beat by 16 (94-78), they totally quit on the coach in the last couple of minutes and gave up wide open uncontested basket, and frankly, watching the offense was almost like watching today's offense -- pass and dribble for a while and then jack up a shot. As long as they were hot they stayed in the game. When they cooled off, they sank behind. ASU ended up 16-14 that year and 7-7 in the SoCon (4th in the conference). Apke is a good guy, and I do think he knows a lot about basketball, but his career record at ASU was 139-147.

Bottom line, I'll pass on those "Good Old Days". They seem a lot like our current days to me. JMO.

The original question from someone else made me think the players transferred away or ran out of eligibility before they earned their degree, or they were kicked off the team but not out of school. So for example Nedd was a freshman and graduated. I assume a few years later, and played more at ASU during the next few years.

Varsity had so much more atmosphere than the HCC even though it was a dump. It's just hard to beat the old style gyms.

I thought Apke was pretty good at those sort of coaching things, which is why I was confused about the original question. I don't have all the info some on this board has as far as history, but I did not remember any sort of scandal or areas of major concern.

JT you are breaking my heart....Varsity was anything but a dump. Have ya been to Cameron....that place even smells like a dump. Same kind of bleachers etc.....ohhhhhhhh....not a dump.! IMO. We have not matched the student participation in Holmes to what Varsity brought to the table! The loudest at Holmes has not matched the loudest at Varsity except maybe for opening night....and that was short lived!

Look, let's be honest; Varsity was/is a dump. Did it have "character" and "atmosphere" and all the other great descriptors being thrown at it? NO. I understand why those terms are thrown out, and why they are used to describe places like Duke's Cameron and Varsity Gym, but it's not the place; it's the team, fans, game and experience all rolled up into one that leaves the fond memories in our minds.

When we put a mediocre team in Holmes, with a crowd of less than 2000, and the noise level never gets very high, it's easy to say that the place has no "atmosphere". If folks got excited enough about ASU basketball to fill up Holmes and we were playing teams that were good, the place would be rocking and no one would long for Varsity. Holmes would have plenty of "atmosphere".

Final thought: If Varsity Gym is so great, then I assume you think Georgia Southern has a superior basketball facility to ASU? Hanner Fieldhouse is closer to Varsity Gym than it is to Holmes Center. Yet, when the discussion on here turns to facilities in general, I NEVER hear anyone suggest such.

Just win, baby. The atmosphere will take care of itself.

According to the 2012-13 Basketball Yearbook that crowd was the largest in history, 8,564. I was there, it was packed and it was rocking.
The largest crowd in HCC was vs. Davidson in '09, 8,350, same source.

Edit: I had the wrong game, the '90 ETSU game was 8,564, and was awesome, 96-94, down to the wire. The '91 game was 8,072.
