Apps suffer from a case of "Capel Collapse"

Unread post by asu66 » Fri Feb 22, 2013 2:05 pm

Four or so years ago, some of us were lamenting what came to be called the "Fancher Fade" as ASU teams blew both early and late leads and lost nail biters both home and away; and saw paid attendance at HCC dwindle. Today, history is repeating itself with what could be called the "Capel Collapse" and even less fan support. When will someone step up and bring this to an end?

Mountaineers still in hunt for first-round SoCon Tourney bye

Appalachian State’s chances for a free pass in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament were enhanced Thursday night.

Samford failed to increase its lead in the chase for the fourth and final first-round bye for the league tournament as result of a 63-62 loss to North Division winner Elon.

Davidson, Elon and College of Charleston all have locked up a first-round bye for the tournament, which will begin March 8 in Asheville.

Samford (8-7) has a half-game lead over Appalachian (8-8) and Western Carolina (8-8) in the race for the final first-round bye. Chattanooga (6-9) also remains in the picture.

Each of the teams have two or three regular-season games remaining. In the event of a tie for the final bye, Appalachian could end up with one tiebreaker edge as result of a victory over first-place Elon earlier this season.

The remaining regular-season schedules for teams involved:

Samford (8-7) – UNC Greensboro, at Appalachian, at Western Carolina.

Appalachian (8-8) – Samford, Chattanooga.

Western Carolina (8-8) – Chattanooga, Samford.

Chattanooga (6-9) – Elon, at Western Carolina, at Appalachian.

Appalachian State's struggle to hold leads continues

Appalachian State built another lead, and lost another lead, in a potentially costly loss to The Citadel on Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers, who still have a shot at landing the fourth and final first-round bye in the Southern Conference Tournament, but now will have to rely on outcomes of other games, have had a reoccurring problem of holding onto leads in SoCon games this season.

In fact, the number of games in which it has happened is striking.

Five times the Mountaineers have held sizable second-half leads only to fall behind:

Wofford – ASU led by nine points in the second half, then fell behind before recovering to win.

Chattanooga – ASU led by 19 points with 6:36 left in regulation but wound up in overtime and lost.

Georgia Southern – ASU won both meetings in overtime, but not before blowing a 17-point lead in the second half of the first game and a seven-point lead with 2:40 left in regulation the second time.

Elon – ASU took an eight-point with 5:43 left before losing.

First-half leads are more vulnerable, but the Mountaineers have struggled to hold early leads as well:

College of Charleston – ASU led by eight points in the first half in an eventual loss.

Furman – ASU built an 18-point lead in the first half and lost all but one point of the lead before holding on to win.

UNC Greensboro – ASU led by 12 points in the first half, lost the lead but recovered to win.

The Citadel – ASU led by nine points in the first half but wound up losing in overtime.
