Statistical Comparison to Last Season

As disappointing as the losses to JMU/Western were, I imagine we'd be looking at this season in a much more positive light if we'd come through with wins.

Comparing our D1 performance through this seasons first eight games with the entirety of last season. We did have a couple more difficult teams in our initial slate last season, so not the best comparison. But still helps to get an idea for where things sits.

2016 <> 2017
First 8 D1: 2-6 vs 4-4
FG% 40.6% vs 45%
FT% 67.5% vs 65.1%
3P% 32.7% vs 35.9%
PTS 70.5 vs 80.6
RBs 36.6 vs 40.9
AST 12.8 vs 12.9
Tos 13.9 vs 16.9
STls & Blks inline

So we're absolutely shooting better (again somewhat softer competition). It would seem that were turning the ball at a higher rate even considering the increased number of possessions. The drop in free throw % has cost us about five points already and given how tight these games have been, that's an area for improvement. Solid 3P% shooting, hope we can keep it up.

The two games specifically mentioned had our worst FT and turnover numbers I'd believe. Hoping for a crisper team tonight.

We are 3-5 against D1 competition to date.

That's no fun! I only come to this forum when I can scream "FIRE FOX!"
Western loss was a complete fluke.

I never can understand why FT % is sooo poor. 2/3 success is just terrible, i do realize in general throughout the game that number has dropped over the years. But it seems that you have to try to be that bad. Do they not practice this as much anymore?

I don't believe teams,or individual players , are as " fundamentally sound " as they were in decades past.Ive watched the game evolve and that's just what I've observed. Free throws are fundamental, no excuse to shoot less than 75 percent as a team but a lot do.The lack of rebound positioning , simply blocking out, a fading art. In my day if the ball hit the floor on a missed shot we ran until we puked. It didn't happen much.

I tried to analyze the stats about a week ago and my basic basketball knowledge allowed me to gain nothing but a lot of confusion. I was hoping to find that perfect stat that showed why they were dropping games I thought they could win but to no avail. I guess the dream of having the next moneyball movie written about me is shattered

The only interesting thing I could see is that they are either ranked in the top 100 in a stat or in the 200-250s+ in other stats overall in the NCAA

Edit: I think with only 11 games played the first game is skewing the numbers slightly and that they will start reflecting a more accurate picture in the next 2 weeks.

Well done on this, appreciate the work. Once we get into Sun belt play, I think we can look at this again after the first half of the schedule. Hard to compare the opponents from one year to the next and really grasp our deficiencies. Obviously we can a hit a couple more free throws, but we are not the only teams in the country that struggles there. Does not make it OK.
