We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. In its most simple form, here is the basic penalty. There are certain circumstances where the penalty is greater! Every situation tends to have its own peculiarities.moonshine wrote:How is the kid being penalized?
What is the National Letter of Intent (NLI)?
The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution.
Prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year
(two semesters or three quarters).
Institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year (two semesters or
three quarters).
Basic Penalty for not fulfilling the NLI agreement: Serve one year in residence (full‐time two
semesters or three quarters) at the next NLI member institution and lose one season of eligibility/competition in all sports.

Re: Devonte Graham
No I think it's more of making the kid honor his commitment. I'm sure if we decided we didn't need him any more and said "see ya later, take care" it would have been real clear to him that it was "binding".app123 wrote:So they're penalizing a kid because of a booster or coach's alleged act?

These are the same questions I was asking.....
What’s he trying to accomplish? Does he want to burn bridges with Garner Road, one of the stronger AAU programs in the Mid-Atlantic? Is he really that ticked off that a player wants a chance to play in a bigger conference? Is it really worth the negative publicity

He is even more gone at the end of the season and with this we know that his assistants will not get the job so we get to start fresh.

App is getting raked over the coals on twitter right now. I had over 500 posts to go through after I got back from the MVA-F on 421 this afternoon and at least 150 of them are about this with more every minute. We are now being accused of holding him "hostage". It's also been picked up by Yahoo sports and CBSSportsline. Still blogs so far but eventually it will be picked up on the main page as a story.

These are just in the last few minutes. No win situation right now. Kid breaks his word and App is the bad guy.

It might be holding him to his word, but this is a no-win situation for Capel. Other recruits will see this and it won't be good.
He needs to come out and say something instead of this code of silence the entire MBB department has done for the last few months.

The kid will be fine.
He may need a year to mature, off the court.
Other schools have held their ground and survived
Great kid or not, live up to the agreement or pay the price...sorry but thats life
I will sleep well with APP decision either way.

phillys right, we are going to be fine, and he is right, we are not the first, nor will we be the last that holds a kid to his word.

Re: Devonte Graham
I know other schools have been through this before and survived and we will also but that's not the same as saying this will not hurt us in some ways. We've had more than our fair share of bad press in the past few years. And social media grows more every single day. When this has happened in the past only the university's fans, the family of the player involved, and a few hard core overall fans even knew that it was happening. Today it's blasted all over the web from Facebook to Twitter to sports web sites and it's there for all the world to see (it's the lead story on the front page of Yahoo sports NCAA BB page right now, blog or not). This is a different world and a different time and the last thing we need during our 2014 recruiting and this transition to a new conference is this kind of stupid junk.
I said long time ago that if someone doesn't want to be here then I don't want them here. If they are not going to give 110% for their team and school then what's the point. But it's gone too far now and, in this no win situation, we will be made the bad guy no matter what happens. Exactly what kind of affect this has remains to be seen. But since I spend several hours a day searching the net for recruiting info I'm sure I'll be one of the first to know.

Amen Firemoose!!!!
Why hasn't Capel/School addressed this in some form or fashion?
Does Capel actually think 1 KID was going to save his job?
This negative attention needs to stop, Sever all ties to this KID and let's move on and focus on recruiting, new conference and finding a NEW coach

Re: Devonte Graham
What is the bad press going to cost us...Sweet 16, Final 4? Is it really going to keep that kid that was going to push us into national championship from coming to AppState?
No, No and No! We're pretty low on the basketball foodchain anyway and any press about this, at the most, might make a player that was going to go here, go to Western or somewhere equally as bad. It's not going to keep the kid that was considering Carolina or Duke from coming to App for sure.
What else will the bad press do...keep someone that doesn't really know if they want to go to AppState from signing a NLI until something better comes along? Most positively.
Sorry, but I don't see the down side. If our basketball program is going to be successful it's going to be on finding those little diamond that other teams have overlooked and signing them. If it's becomes known that if they sign and they have a better than expected year all they have to do is get their family and friends to write a few blogs and App can't stand the heat, we'll certainly sign a bunch of diamond but we'll only keep the ones that turn into coal, while other schools still the bright and shiny ones.

Re: Devonte Graham
last post on this subject, I understand you guys point that we should just let him go, but I disagree, my view is once you get a reputation of caving in every time a kid gets a better offer, then your never going to be able to build your program, all you become is a safety net for these kids, who never have a real desire to come to Boone, but just want to use the University for their selfish reasons. You guys talk about other recruits watching this, and forming a negative view of App, well, they also are watching to see what schools they can take advantage of and use, again, as their safety net. if it means that much to him, come play a year in Boone, he can use the time to learn how to be collage athlete, use the time to get his grades in order, and learn how to play collage basketball, after a year, if he is still determined to leave, then he is better prepared to make the move. Contrary to idiots who know nothing about App, coming here and playing for atleast a year, is not some kind of death sentence, we actually have a wonderful University, he might actually become a better basketball player, and maybe a better person by spending a year in Boone.

I've seen nothing out of our basketball program that makes me think he'll be a better player by being here for a year.moehler wrote:last post on this subject, I understand you guys point that we should just let him go, but I disagree, my view is once you get a reputation of caving in every time a kid gets a better offer, then your never going to be able to build your program, all you become is a safety net for these kids, who never have a real desire to come to Boone, but just want to use the University for their selfish reasons. Re: Devonte Graham
I think you misunderstood what I meant when talking about him coming here. I wasn't referring to the release or not release. I was just saying, personally, I wouldn't want someone here who doesn't want to be here since it's doubtful they will give 100% to their team. Who wants someone on any team who is mad or doesn't give a crap about the team? That's all.moehler wrote:last post on this subject, I understand you guys point that we should just let him go, but I disagree, my view is once you get a reputation of caving in every time a kid gets a better offer, then your never going to be able to build your program, all you become is a safety net for these kids, who never have a real desire to come to Boone, but just want to use the University for their selfish reasons. And Maddog: I'm not talking about basketball only but all sports and all recruits. I look through hundreds if not thousands of posts a day and these kids do talk to each other. They talk about how a school treats SA's and when I see recruits re-tweeting posts that speak bad of App then they are at least thinking about what is being said. I agree with your point that maybe kids will think twice about signing an LOI if they're not 100% committed, which is good. We've got several football recruits who appear to be waiting for a better offer. Difference is they haven't signed anything. But it also might make a kid think twice about committing at all, which is not so good.
I'm sorry you don't see any downside. I spend a lot of my time looking through this social media BS trying to find info to give the people on this board. But that also means I see the negative things that are said about the school we all love. I do it for you guys but it may be time to rethink everything.
