Can't play in Varsity. The inside was redone as an indoor track and field practice area and added many basketball courts for practice. So I don't believe We would be able to play in Varsity.

Re: Where are the students?
To sum it up... students, and everyone for that matter, like winners and a "program".
Along with the almost unlimited media options for watching sports taking students away these days, the downturn of ASU basketball follows; Laney, Apke, buzz, cobb, BUZZ, COBB, Fancher, McMahon and especially incapable Caple. A little good, even some great in that mix, but most for the worse both in who came and went and who didn't get a shot.
The second coming and mostly the second leaving of Buzz started the trend in the "modern" era. Fancher had a very respectable program in my opinion; good student athletes, a winning record, very respectable. However, he never got us to the conference tournament championship or a bid to the big dance... Cremins got us 3 regular season conference championships and one bid, Buzz got us 4 and one bid and Fancher got us 3. If Fancher could have gotten us to the big dance, we might have a very different basketball story in Boone right now... How on earth did we go from Houston to Capel?
Further, a weak home schedule... We were/have been I-A during the entire football I-AA era and cant get anyone to come to the mountain it seems. The schedule keeps a lot of folks from attending games AND it isn't like were consistently dominating the schedules we had. What level of schools have been on the schedule in Boone on a consistent basis, other than Davidson and an occasional GT? The ETSU rivalry was awesome in the 80's... Mister Jennings and Coach Les Robinson... the Furman Vermin, some UNCC games... The "local rivalries" that were fun and brought out the crowds. Times have changed. Kids/folks stay home to watch Duke/UNC/NBA/NFL/Etc. on TV.
All during the Apke to Fox era, we have become a "Football School", as perceived by many. We don't even have a TV game this year on our schedule (unless something has changed that I am unaware).
I hope that Coach Fox can right the ship and build/restore our basketball program. I want to see the day that my freshman daughter nags me to come up to Boone for that weeknight basketball game, or tells me she will catch me later, she is going to the game with friends.
Our hoops program just hasn't been sexy enough on a consistent basis over the past three decades to hold the fan base and capture the type attention that has gone to the football program. The Caple debacle and overload of games on TV and other media detract in a big way...
The simple solution for hoops is "Win baby, win!" If you win, they will come.

Re: Where are the students?
Let's take baby steps starting tonight and attempt to beat the previous game's attendance which was 767. My goodness, I would hope we can accomplish this! I for one will be there with my wife. Coach Fox and the team need our support!

Re: Where are the students?
I think one thing that could help us tremendously would be having a coach stick around for 10 ish years and create a strong winning program. We have been too much of a stepping stone in this regard and the revolving door doesn't help with the the stability it takes to create a "program." This will mean that we will have to pony up a nice contract if we do get a winning coach in the hopes he doesn't get taken in the first 4-5 years. Its difficult, but not impossible.

Re: Where are the students?
1. Win
2. Make it a party happening event
3. Dog and Suds nights
4. Get some celebs to show up.
Just like any other marketing event, Make it "the place to be". I don't buy that students will sit at home/dorm/apt watching Duke/UNC when there is a party going on down the street on campus. Get the girls to come and the guys will follow.

Was not aware of this. Thought I heard within the last year or two it was batted around about the women playing there. Must've been years ago and times flying.3rd wrote:Can't play in Varsity. Re: Where are the students?
Attendance tonight was 1090. So how do we draw 300 more on a Tuesday night than a Saturday afternoon?

Re: Where are the students?
If the current students are like we were bout 30 years ago - Where we was, was
= Either in class, partying at the ASU Football game at Good Ole Conrad Stadium, studying, partying, working out, getting ready for party at the next ASU Football game, partying, working at part time job, Library studying, at the concert, Sleeping a little, or partying.
Seriously though, I think Coach Fox is good for the future of App State Basketball. Give him some time and he will turn this thing around. I like his energy and dedication. The Students will catch on and show up at Holmes Center soon.

A lot of students leave on the weekends when there isn't a home football game.bigCasu wrote:Attendance tonight was 1090. So how do we draw 300 more on a Tuesday night than a Saturday afternoon?
