UT coach and on field talk

I was not a fan of the UT coach addressing our guys while Satt was talking to them. Were our guys supposed to be honored by his presence? I know he meant well and said nice things, but I thought it condescending, and from the look on Satt's face and several of the players, I think it was not seen favorably. If we had won, would UT players and coaches appreciated an on field pump up session from Satt? I think not.

He meant well.
That works here, and on my tombstone.

I will find something else to be upset about.

There was a Vol fan after the game walking out of Neyland who put his arm around me and "comforted" me unprovoked. At the end, he said "now Tennessee moves up where we belong and you go back down where you belong". I darted a look and he scampered a bit bewildered that I would take offense to that statement.
I see the same thing here from Butchy. If he really meant it, he would have done it afterward in the locker room where there's no national media cameras. He's grandstanding here to send a message to his team more than compliment App State.

I've thought about this as well. It could have just been a nice gesture to tell our guys that we deserved to win that game and were the better team that night and that they (UT) got lucky to win.... Who knows?... well I guess Satt and the players know.

While possessing an arrogance of self entitlement, at the end of the trip I found their fans to be nicer than those from the peanut swamp or the isolated voting district in Southern Carolina.
I do not approve of a coach invading a post game huddle!

Echoing the sentiment of CVAPP on finding something else to be upset about, here are my thoughts on the post game talk from Coach Jones. Maybe he asked Satt if he could come over and say something. And even if he didn't and he let his emotions and admiration for our team take priority over protocol, it was a nice gesture to come over and tell them how much he appreciated the effort.
It has become so easy for us, as a society to find umbrage with the most innocuous gestures and actions. Having said that, for the guy that told T-Dog that we can now go back to where we belong; he should have been throat punched.

I thought it was a classy thing to do to praise the team directly. I've seen Coach K do the same thing when mid majors gave them close games. I'm sure there are other examples as well. Not worth getting upset about.

It was totally disrespectful and condescending. We came there to beat his ass and almost did. Our guys don't view themselves as second class to Tennessee. We are a proud program with a rich history. He obviously doesn't believe that or respect that. If he did, he would have never pulled a stunt like that. It was very insulting to our program. Go do that to Alabama when they just barely beat you coach. Disrespectful and condescending.

I'm sure those were exactly his intentions . Get over it. It happens often. Sick of many people getting offended at the smallest things and think App State doesn't get any love. People get upset when we're called Appy State. Give me a break. There is no written or moral rule that says what Coach Jones did was a negative thing. To use Alabama as a comparison is a stretch.
Many coaches at all levels do this and by the majority it's looked at as showing respect for the opponent. App State fans want to get shitty and feel every action is us being patronized or disrespected.
First Appy State now this... Congratulations to all, the white out is no longer the most petty thing discussed on this board.

I would suggest you might want to hear what our players and coaches thought about him talking to them before YOU feel "our program" was disrespected and insulted ---

First of all, it's a chat board, I didn't care for it and wanted to see if anyone else felt the same. I fully carry the banner that we live in a way too PC culture. Not calling for anyone's head, I didn't loose sleep over it, it just struck me as odd. Have not really seen that before, especially after a game where emotions were high and a coach was already addressing his team. Again, from all accounts, he clearly said nice things and meant well, but I felt it was a little condescending that he came to lift up our chin and interrupt our coach. As a coach, I, like most, would prob choose not do this. Did he ask Scott, I don't know, butch seems like a very emotional, off the cuff guy, and prob just rolled with the moment. No need to "get over" anything, just asking a simple question. Clearly there is the opinion here that it was ok to do, and for others it was not appreciated, that's all I was wondering. As is mine, it's your right to post on how you feel, so rage on and read way to much into a simple thread.

Another reason I posted this, there are some on here very close to the program, and if they have insight, it would be interesting to hear it. If the players and coaches liked it and it helped, awesome and that answers my simple question. If they hated it, well that too answers my question.

I am sure he believes that game was more about what they didn't do than what we did. Just like every other P5 coach would. Whether you like it or not the outcome was supposed to be much different. I think we flat out dominated and no case can be made otherwise. The speach can be taken many ways but I am sure it was well meaning whether condescending or not. It was condescending if you believe as I do that we totally deserved to be there and beat their asses. If you believe we are an inferior team from an inferior conference then we should be honored he took time to address us. Finally I am not delusional and I know we could not play an SEC schedule week after week. But on Sept 1 we were well prepared and
played our asses off. We out played an SEC team that day and if we can continue to play that way this year will be special and we will continue to grow our brand nationally.

THIS!
well put, exactly how I feel. Had some lady Vol fan in the elevator Sun morn tell me "you all have nothing to be ashamed about" wth? ashamed? I looked at her and told her we have 80 years of football behind what happened last night, last thing I was feeling was "ashamed"! Frickin condescending BS.

Vols fan in Publix today... Always wearing my App State pride on weekends... came up.. told me "Hell of a game.. you all played a hell of a game, and almost got us... we were lucky to win... Don't think I want to see you all again..." I told him thanks.. and.. we'd love to see them in Boone!

I thought it was classy of Butch to come talk to our guys. He knew we beat them in every way, and that was a chance to tell everyone on our team that we out played them. I was thinking more like he was humble in victory.

I will take what Butch did over what Spurrier told the press down in Florida back in 1990. They had beaten Oklahoma State and a reporter asked him what was the difference and I assume the reporter meant as in what led them to win the game decisively and Spurrier said "the difference was when we saw them on the schedule". Totally classless but again that was Spurrier.

I think he was honestly impressed that his four and five star recruits got man handled through most of the contest. How he chose to display that can be critiqued all we want but he did chose to have a few words with some of our players. They paid a price in embarrassment that we all relish here, but they were saved by total destruction unlike the Michigan team and Lloyd Carr. That is the most unfortunate thing about the game.
