Missed XP

Unread post by coachprouty » Fri Sep 02, 2016 9:15 am

I am not 100% sure, but it seemed that Rubino's motion was thrown off by some movement on the line. Did anyone else notice this as well?

Either way, I hope Rubino gets support and not hate. He is going to be a big factor in the rest of the season!

As a student it's sad to see some things people are saying on campus about Rubino. Did he have a rough game? Absolutely, but no reason for him to be publicly ridiculed by people that he shares a campus with.
Back to your point I agree also that I saw some movement on the line, I also noticed his head popped up far too early. Either way very tough moment for anyone, especially a freshman kicker at Neyland

Probably the same stuff they were saying about Matics in 2014.

I wouldn't take any of it seriously. I've seen overwhelming support from our fans online. He'll bounce back against odu

A friend of mine who was a place kicker in college said his technique was "awful" on both missed kicks. Are there any other experienced kickers out there that noticed technique issues. If that is what it is, it should be able to be corrected in practice. I hope his teammates and fellow students are supportive because if last night stays in his head, all the coaching in the world may not fix him.

Satt said in the postgame that he thought he tried to guide it rather than just hitting it hard.

I feel for Rubino, it was pretty much a nightmare situation to be tossed into. I believe he will get better, and that App's veteran players and coaches will give him all the support he needs, and the tools to bounce back and be successful. We watched Matics become nearly automatic after a rough start (Camellia Bowl and bad footing in Montgomery aside). Rubino can do the same.

It is a rough way to start out a career. Hopefully he learns from it and improves and puts it behind him to become a great player. If he can that, few will fault him for his first game mishaps. If he can't do that, it will get even rougher for him. The mental game is always a huge component to sports.

All he needs is to knock a few in next game. He will be fine

Rubino had a bad game, obviously. But he didn't lose it alone. If we manage the clock better on that last regulation drive, if we contain Dobbs on the OT 3rd down scramble, if we fall on that fumble, if Lamb throws to Burns instead of Meadors on 4th down... if if if.

Agree with bigdaddyg - let's give him 6 or 7 PATs to kick against ODU and see if that helps.

So you are saying a backup comes in for the 2nd half?

I kicked in HS and helped volunteer coach HS kickers after graduation. I am not a pro and no way am I an expert. I feel for Rubino as a freshman that is just tons of pressure.

Rubino pulled all three kicks to the right even the one PAT he made looked very shaky. His stance was too open and he pulled his head up too soon. Worse thing a kicker can do is try to see if the kick is good before his motion is complete. I used to tie a sting from facemask to the breastplate of the shoulders pads for the kids I helped coach - forcing the head down.

The 42 yarder looked like he pulled up and did not make solid contact. Kicker sometimes forget their head and legs are connect on one body. Head up and the stance opens and the ball will push right. Again, he is worried about making the kicks instead of just kicking the ball.

Not much of an excuse for the PAT, those should automatic for an FBS kicker. The 42 yarder I can understand. It is all up to Rubino now as to whether he can clear his head and just focus on kicking instead of thinking.

We are still getting fried by ESPN during the Carolina-Georgia game, because of "poor clock management" Thursday, apparently unaware of all that transpired during that entire drive and the uncertainty over Rubino.......who will be fine in the long run. Understanding the facts tend to help when examining a situation.....something the "World Wide Leader" occasionally forgets.

In fairness, it was poor clock management.

Fried? Seriously? The comment was giving credit where credit is due. They said we straight up out played them. And the statement had we made a kick or better managed clock, should have won.

If anything, they were skewering Tennessee.

I have to agree with hapapp it was bad clock management and it is not the first time. Coach had a great game plan and did a great job but did mess up on that one.

We are playing big boy football, now. Part of that is receiving big boy criticism.
