Sorry if this is a question that's been asked and answer before, but why do we give out the same number to student-athletes in the same class? I understand an incoming freshmen and a redshirt Junior, but I don't understand how two sophomores get the same number.

As long as one player is offensive and one is defensive they can both have the same # in the same game. Examples include #11 and #6

As long as players with the same number do not play together on the same play, it's fine. Usually players with the same number are on different sides of the ball.

Numbers are grouped by position, moreso in the NFL but college regulates offensive linemen. For instance, the rules state you need at least five linemen on offense and their numbers have to be between 50-79.
