It appears to me it would be a lateral move for him.

Alma Mater
Better program on the way up and the chance to work under a coach on the rise

Does not appear lateral to me.

On the surface, it is a lateral move - just as Watts and Holt were. And that's assuming App would give him an AHC title to match his title at Kent.

However, there are other factors. For one, it's his alma mater. That matters to a lot of people.

For another, he's currently working for a HC who's 9-26 in three years at Kent State, with no positive trend apparent. If he stays there, he could be out of work in a year. At App, he's coming on board with a winner. Much better opportunity for career advancement.

ETA: Or, just read proasu's post right above this one for the same ideas in more concise form. ;)

Not a lateral move at all. However, Kents offensive stats are not very good. I wouldn't be mad if we got him, but would prefer someone else.

You need to look at his complete resume, not just at Kent State.

We paid Ledford $40-$50,000 more than what Clark is currently making at Kent State. That's a 50%+ raise.

I was unable to view the attachment, but assuming it supports what you and others are saying I am glad to know we are not the lowest paying among the G5s.

He made $82k last year at Kent State. When he was at Purdue, was making in excess of $150k

I don't understand why schools including ours are so quick to lock in on a coach just because they are alumni. Is Clark the best option out there? Or, is it just an easy hire?

You either trust Scott or you don't. It's pretty much unheard of for a move up program to be able to bring in replacement coaches with as many years of FBS coaching experience as our first two hires have had. And they are working out well for us. If we're able to bring in a third that has both P5 and G5 experience, who wants to be here, can sell the program to recruits, and isn't looking to leave at the first offer to come along then I'm not seeing much of a downside. Scott's track record so far has been pretty good. I'm choosing to trust that he will hire who he believes is the best hire.

Satt has surrounded himself with excellent assistants since day one. Until he botches a hire, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Both Watts and Holt have been excellent hires as position coaches but are also excellent recruiters.

Assuming alums are the most qualified candidate for the job they make great hires. They should love the school, know the area, and be able to sell it to recruits.

Quit holding on to the slow start (some of you) and trust our coaching staff and administration to get the right guy whether he's here for 2 years or 10 he'll make a positive impact.

Dare I say taking a look at Holt or Pat Mills over at Western Carolina? Both App alums. Part of the crew that went with Spier but it's just a thought. Let me know if I'm crazy.
