ODU's players take responsibility for lopsided loss

Appalachian was passed over by Conference USA when the league expanded in 2012 and 2013. ODU was among the schools chosen over Appalachian.

“They came in here with a chip on their shoulder,” Wilder said. “They came in here to prove they’re a good football team that can beat anyone in Conference USA. You could see the energy their players had.”

CUSA is weak, Rule the Sunbelt and make the jump to the AAC. That will be the responsible move.

From all I can see, Wilder is a good coach - no nonsense, takes responsibility and teaches his players to do the same.

As to whether or not App players had a chip on their shoulders, I wouldn't begin to speculate. It's just as likely that our coaching staff expects us to win every time we take the field. That kind of expectation is good.

Regardless of which conference we play in ... or not ... it's great to be a Mountaineer!

I hope they play the best game in program history next year when they come to Boone. This butt hurt we beat ourselves crap is lame. App is so much further along, they have only existed for what 6 years. Making mistakes is one thing, getting completely shut down like they did is a whole different conversation.

Agreed. CC aspired to CUSA, and I'm sure that's why he's at a miserable large market program today, in the hopes they add another weak program from a big city. As for App State, we are over CUSA and will gladly wait for a real football conference such as the AAC, who values earned reputation over population.

Thank you appbio91, at least tip your cap to the other guy for completely having your number. That said I get why they have to say those things. Anything else would equate to saying "wow they're just so much better than us I can't believe we suck this bad". Not good for player morale or fan morale.

"ODU’s offensive line is banged up, Wilder said"

I believe you!

Let's just say we took them to the wood shed and taught them a few lessons about big boy football. A quote from the players...

"They want it to be more physical in practice. They want us to hit more and worker harder.

Wilder learned a lesson or two I would bet even though he will not admit it. He knows Sat called off the dogs.

“When it started to get away from us, they jumped all over us,”

Another hometown paper stated that it could have been much worse but we had our third and fouth string guys in the game in 4th.

Wilder is right that we played with a chip on our shoulder, but it had nothing to do with them being CUSA instead of us. Dabo Swinney mentioned our teaming playing with that attitude BEFORE the Clemson game. That chip comes from a few years of playing well below our standards. Our team knows there are higher expectations at App State, and they want to live up to if not raise those even higher. The chip on our shoulder is proving we are a legit FBS team, and we will play physical football for 60 minutes against every team we face. A young program like ODU has a hard time understanding what 85 years of tradition mean.

One major thing I want to congratulate our Staff on is our fire and preparedness. Typically in the past we have been slow to start coming out of a bye week. Not this past weekend, I saw a hungry team out there. I just hope that can keep up that motivation.

I agree. I think the "chips-on-shoulders" are going to be felt for more than one game. I hope they last all season, and I'm beginning to think they might. Our guys are playing like they have unfinished business (and they do).

Totally agree with playing with a chip but I have noticed that our team has once again started to regain some "swagger" . However, it is a quiet swagger , if that makes any sense. I can actually see the confidence but it comes without the old shake and bake, in your face, front flips that used to get us flagged for unsportsmanlike. Coach Satt and the rest of the coaches definitely have done a good job in honing this spear to a very sharp point.

What you're describing is the difference between confidence and arrogance. Confidence is arrogance under control.

The team this year seems to have much better self-control and focus than we've seen in recent years. There also seems to be a much tighter "wrap" to the football family - the perception that the team and coaches are all, truly, on the same page and ready to back each other up. All of that, as is usually the case, starts at the top. It's fun to watch the transformation.
