BOONE — Two — sometimes even three — practices a day used to be the norm as college football teams prepared for the season in just a month.

Thanks to year-round strength-and-conditioning programs and individual skill work, it’s no longer necessary to run players ragged on steamy August afternoons.

Instead, Coach Scott Satterfield said he and his staff were able to use Appalachian State’s lone two-a-day on Tuesday to teach, rather than focusing on making sure players were in shape.
