Not to stir up the Campbell game again, but I was thinking-
I know why we had to play Campbell. It was smart to put in the provision about any move to FBS would nullify the head to head series, and I assume we do so without a large penalty payment to McNeese State? But why not play them anyways, just in Boone, and give them a bit more money. How many more tickets would we needed to have sold to make it financially viable?

Interesting question. I think we definitely might have sold a few extra tickets to a game versus McNeese but I'm not sure it would've been enough to make up for the extra paycheck dollars. I will also add this: I hope 2/3 years from now we would look at this proposition, the idea of what if McNeese in place of Campbell, with the same eyes we are now looking at the game versus Campbell. In other words, I hope that in a few years we'll be looking at McNeese as being far enough "down the totem pole" that we are a bit "above" bringing them to Boone...the same way many now feel/felt about Campbell, and to a lesser extent, Liberty. If that makes sense.

It probably has as much to do with McNeese wanting to come to Boone as it does anything else. They played Nebraska this weekend, and darn near walked out with the win. Probably got more than we could have paid, too.

The only FCS teams that will matter in attendance now are the local ones that can drive here and maybe the top elite. The draw of an App State football game for App State football fans is App State football. There's a lot of people who don't know or care who the opponent is.
Even though we were just FCS, the perception whether its Campbell or NDSU is that we as an FBS team should win. I'm fine with playing a team that's farther down the totem poll. IMO when we schedule FCS, App should schedule local FCS when possible minus the SoCon except for ETSU.
I don't want to see Elon, Western, Furman, Wofford, UTC, Samford, Citadel, VMI or Mercer in Boone for a long time.

Not me. I want to see us play Furman every year until we have the series lead against them.

Big schools don't play small "should win" games for no reason. There are many facets of the game that you really can't judge until an actual game. Playing Campbell, FCS should give us the ability to fine tune and make adjustment without racking up a "L".
We got to get past the thinking that we have to play a P5 team to be noticed. We need to start preparing to make an impact in the SB and then into the bowl season.
I would like to start the season with a "Campbell like" team and play a P5 in the middle of the season and end on bowls.
I really think this helped our kids get a feeling of accomplishment. Their not going to get big headed(they know who Campbell is), but you could tell by watching them on the field they felt good.

Great post '56. I'd prefer a schedule of solid G5 home and home vs. body bag games.
The ideal schedule is to start with an FCS program that can bring 1-2k fans for an opener, G5 OOC, drivable P5 away game, bye, G5 OOC, alternating home and away conference games. Down the road we mix in a home lower level P5 game every third year.

Saint, agree on your thought but we have to be practical. 6 home games is a MUST to pay the bills. If one has to be campbell or the like, then it has to be. Also, that "Bill" got bigger this year. The less we pay for teams to play at KBS and the bigger the money game, the more in the athletic budget. Gotta remember when making the schedule it is about dollars and sense.

I agree the 6 homes games is important, but I would also consider playing a team like Wake or Duke that is very winnable. If we can get $500k for that type of game then we would about break even compared to pay Campbell $150K to play in Boone. Plus a win over one of those teams would get the fans excited which would generate more cash down the line.

Yes 6 home games is one schedule criteria that must be met each year, completely agree.
Campbell qualifies as an FCS program that can bring 1-2k fans. ETSU, WCU, Citadel (sans chop blocking), Furman, Elon, Tenn Tech., any NC or VA MEAC team, and any Big South team would be fine by me. Limited to one a year of course.

It has been stated that 6 home games is an absolute - someone posted on here some time ago how much a home football weekend brings in to the merchants, etc., of the Boone area but I have no memory of what that figure was

WCU's AD said he'll play us if it's a home and home.
So they can go 20 years without playing App for all I care.

Are Sun Belt Conference teams permitted to play in FCS venues? Seems one of the MMB members posted that that was not permitted.

McNeese came out ok I am sure between the Nebraska check and our buyout, but at the time we cancelled and even when the contract was written who knew what would have happened. McNeese might have been facing Webber Intl U and to ensure that not happening that might have agreed to something early on just for the security of a decent payout and decent to winnable game.
However, I doubt the money on our end would have been enough.

I have no problem with playing them in a home and home. We play the first game at home, and then we play the second game at home.

You didn't answer the question. I'll repeat, "Are Sun Belt Conference members allowed to play in FCS schools' home venues?" If they are not, then that would make the idea moot.
