Honoring Coach Moore??

New member, first post....

Does anyone else think it’s a shame that Coach Moore has not been honored during this football season??

Whether or not you think he should have been let go sooner (the debate points are known) or think he should have been given one more season (and very valid arguments can be made that way as well),
his impact on the University is immeasurable and irrefutable.

I’m troubled that the University is taking the opportunity to recognize Chancellor Peacock during the last home football while ignoring the contributions that Coach Moore made to ASU.
Granted Peacock’s loyalty and devotion to ASU is commendable. But Coach Moore’s loyalty and devotion were just as strong. Yet, to my knowledge, since his “retirement”, there has been NO mention whatsoever of any recognition for him.

I kept hoping that at some point during this football season that the administration would somehow honor Coach Moore. Pre-game, halftime, post-game, something!
It is now obvious that it will not happen. I’m disappointed.

It’s my perception that there is some tension between Cobb/Peacock and Moore. Well, more than perception, based on the way the transition was handled and Peacock’s public statement afterwards, it is clear there is some bad blood between them.

Maybe, just maybe, with a new Chancellor in place, Coach Moore will receive a belated recognition from the University. I still think it’s a shame that such an event has to wait until a *new* administration is in place.

It's a shame that Peacock couldn't put aside whatever differences he has with Jerry Moore and give him *some* kind of honor during this season!

I hope I’m not alone with my thoughts.

Thanks for reading.
Very interested in hearing others’ thoughts.

Thanks,
Ross

That ball is squarely in Jerry Moore's court. The recognition will happen whenever he wants it.

My guess is Moore wants nothing to do with ASU right now. As you said maybe time will heal the wounds and the right thing can be done. As for Peacock I was told that he thought Moore had lost control of the FB team from a disciplinary stand point. Jerry thumbed his nose at him by putting two accused rapists back on the field. No idea if true but would explain the way it ended.

Recognition would have been done last game of last year had Moore been willing. As 89 said 'things are in Moore's court'. I am and have always been a big Moore fan, I can not understand his unwillingness.

Not surprising nothing is planned for this year given the sensitive nature of Coach Moore's departure. Also, given the pressure that Coach Satterfield is under, which was immense before the season even started due to his replacing a legend and which now has only grown worse with the disastrous nature of this season, it's probably not the best idea to have a day honoring said legendary former coach this year. I'm sure it'll happen eventually. FSU just did get around to honoring Bobby Bowden this year. Very similar situation when he left FSU.

Is there anything concrete to back that up or is it just an opinion?

I believe that this sort of thing will happen, eventually. There probably needs to be a little more time.

But, why is the ball in Jerry's court? That implies that the administration has made an offer and he hasn't responded.

I just watched "Ain't In It For My Health" about Levon Helm. A big part of the documentary centered around Helm turning down the Grammys when they wanted to honor The Band with a lifetime-achievement award.

It was a huge honor and Helm called it BS. He was bitter about a lot of things related to The Band.

If somebody is bitter about something, you're going to need to sell them on this kind of idea. I don't think Jerry Moore is going to agree to walk to the 50 yard line before a game just because somebody asked him. Not yet.

The time and circumstances haven't been right--yet. It will happen in due time. No one in the university admin has forgotten. There's just too much raw emotion and bad karma present to do it now. Time will heal the wounds.

You pretty much answered your own question. Whether or not the university has reached out to him Jerry will be the one to decide when the time is right. Nothing will happen until then. And he has plenty of contacts still left that will let App know when that time is.

As I am sure many others here did, I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Moore and talking to him on more than one occasion. He is a man I have a tremendous amount of respect for. Nonetheless, a man that I believe muddied the waters of his own departure. A man that must come to terms with how he wants to be remembered and honored. I am sure that time will come.

It may happen before, but most likely after Cobb and Peacock have gone. Anything sooner will be token.

He showed up last year when the 2012 football team was honored at a basketball game. I don't remember the time line of events but I believe it got a bit uglier after this. I don't think it will happen until Cobb is gone.

Coach Moore came and spoke to the team tonight for a bible study.

Coach also stepped in and prevented a very ugly thing happening to the program just a few weeks ago. He did it very quietly and very few ever knew about it. He loves this school, the program and the players. You don't have to like him but show him some respect. He still cares. He may have made a mistake. Have you?

I don't doubt he loves his players. He's always been a players coach. He's pulled a lot of strings for players over the years. The reason he showed up at the basketball game last year was because of the players. The school is a different matter.

There is a difference between the school and some people in it. I assure you he loves this school.

Since we are chewing cud, the version of the tale I believe was that Coach Moore was invited to take another role at the University instead of coaching his final season. He opted to coach another year and the administration left it up to him to announce his retirement and clue them in as to how and when he wanted to be honored. I have every reason to believe the administration is still waiting on Coach Moore to get back with them on this.

So yeah, I agree with appst89 and I think the ball is in Jerry's court. I believe the administration has made an offer and he has not responded...yet.
