ETSU vs App State?

Greetings from your friend across the mountains in East TN. I'm taking my Dad to his first CFB game in a couple of weeks, and I need some advice. He's a Vols fan through and through, but has also rooted for App State since they've always been the closest team with any kind of national exposure. I'm an ETSU alum and my entire family is from Johnson City, so the upcoming ETSU vs App State game in Boone would be a cool experience.
Here's the dilemma: He has terminal cancer, so this will likely be our first and last time gameday experience. Should we head to Boone for the season opener, or go down to Knoxville for the UT vs. Chatt opener? We can get the best seats in the house (that are still available) for the App State game, but we'd be in the nosebleeds for the UT game. Part of me thinks the experience of at Neyland is worth the extra cost and headache associated with going to Knoxville, parking, walking, traffic, etc. I also know that game will probably be a blowout by the second quarter, whereas ETSU vs App State could potentially be somewhat competitive for a few quarters. Boone is also closer, will probably have better weather, and is far cheaper for better seats.
What is the atmosphere/experience like at Kidd-Brewer? Despite living so close and passing by the stadium a million times, I've never been to a game. Thanks for any advice.

FIrst off, my condolences on your family situation. I pray for as smooth a period as possible for all of you.
Secondly, this is a no-brainer. Go to Knoxville. The game will be a blowout which will make it enjoyable and provide him with the best experience possible. I would go one step further and reach out to Tennessee and see if there is anything they could do (like a DIY make-a-wish situation). It can't hurt to ask. Go to Tennessee message boards and do the same, there may be fans able to help.
There will be more chances to see ETSU in Boone I am sure. This should not be the one you go to.

Agree, no brainer. If he is a Vols fan, go to Knoxville.
If it somehow works out, attend any game in Boone later in September or October, etc.

Sorry to hear of your father's cancer. Although we don't know you, you're in our thoughts and prayers. I'm an App grad and grew up in Boone, however, I have relatives in Elizabethton and my daughter got her Masters at ETSU. Also, my mother side of the family has EastTennessee roots (Shell Creek/TN - Elk Park/NC) area. With that said, I'd let your dad make that decision. And, don't be surprised if he says App-ETSU.

I am sorry your dad and you and your family are having to navigate cancer. If it were me, I’d go to UT. Think about it. He’s happy to see the Vols win (think Rudy: “This is the most beautiful sight these two eyes have ever seen”) and you get to see your rivals get thumped. Come to Boone later if you can. We’ll still be here.

If mobility for Dad is an issue, while both stadiums can be electric, I think Boone is the best choice. There are still good seats available on StubHub in Section 111. You'll be on the 50 yard line on the East Side and seats will be the easiest to access. If he has a handicapped sticker, you can park in the handicapped lot for free and be shuttled right to the East Gate. Wheel chairs are available.
StubHub: Section 111 | Row G
8.1 Great seat rating
Seats 6, 7
Zone: Lower Level
Ticket Price $90each
Quantity
2 tickets

Go to UT.
However, Call ticket office now and explain situation. Take advantage of any special handicap/mobility/special treatment they can offer as they probably can do. I took my Dad to App several years ago and he was late 80’s then and with help from friend and App ticket office got golf cart ride to stadium and special seating with easy access in/out. Experience was priceless.
I am sure they will take care of you and your Dad.
Good luck and enjoy moment.

One of the good things we do offer is free parking for anyone with a handicap pass. There is a shuttle that will drop you off right at the gate and take you back as well.
Sometimes the lines can be long at the end of the game to board the bus. Whichever you decide, I hope it is a great and cherished experience for everyone.

so sorry about your father. I agree with others, if he is a big Vols fan, you have to go there. Their stadium will be electric, they love them some Vols. However, our stadium is also incredible on game day.
Since this is a true bucket list item for your dad, take him there.
But come to a game in Boone as well. We are consistently included in lists of best game day atmospheres/experiences.

Thank you. I actually live in Elizabethton, and grew up in the Milligan area between Elizabethton and JC.

If you end up in Boone, get tickets on the West/App/Home side so that your Dad doesn't have direct sunlight on him for the whole game. Good luck.

UT is a mess with construction at Neyland, check that out with UT first to see if you can handle. UT with 100,000 is much louder than APP with 30,000. Blessings for y’all.

Thanks so much for everyone's prayers, well wishes, and advice. Someone in the App State Reddit page actually reached out and offered me two free tickets on the 40 yard line, and a parking pass for App State vs ETSU! I definitely can't pass that offer up! Seems providential to me.
God willing I'll be able to take my Dad to a Vols game this Fall when it's a little cooler (he doesn't care for the heat) and I have a little more notice to plan everything out.

If you run into anyone with the surnames Buck, Shell, Ellis or Buchanon tell them "Cousin Gormer" says hey.
