In games involving Football Bowl Subdivision teams, each school will have the option to use coach-to-player communications through the helmet to one player on the field. That player will be identified by having a green dot on the back midline of the player's helmet.

The communication from the coach to the player will be turned off with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock or when the ball is snapped, whichever comes first.

For all three divisions, teams have the option of using tablets to view in-game video only. The video can include the broadcast feed and camera angles from the coach's sideline and coach's end zone.

Teams can have up to 18 active tablets for use in the coaching booth, sideline and locker room. Tablets cannot be connected to other devices to project larger additional images and cannot include analytics, data or data access capability or other communication access. All team personnel will be allowed to view the tablets during the game.

This could lower the need for timeouts and help players fix fundamental issues mid game decreasing injury potential.

There is no good reason their ipads shouldn't be hooked up to video, data,stats and other info they are saying they shouldn't be. This is 2024 not 1924.

Shoot, give the coaches meta quests for augmented reality. Let them see stats hovering above players heads. Coaches could see lines on the fields where players should be running for each play etc...

We aren't quite to it yet but we aren't far away from having players visors be augmented reality with lines showing them their routes. Even if you didn't use them in games, use them in practices. Embrace the tech to make players better.

Anyone "Luke warm" about using statistics and analytics to guide decisions is foolish. Why would you not use statistical data to improve team performance?

Why even play the game? We could run simulations based on the statistical inputs and watch virtual reality games. No more NIL too.

Sounds crazy but it’s not going to really shock me to see it happen. People are losing interest in reality.

Regarding the use of devices not being connected to other/larger ones: the NFHS has allowed that in the high schools for 10 years or more. My school had tablets and flat screen TVs on the sidelines. The TVs got feeds from the tablets on top of the press box.

And Johnny Unitas called his own plays - drew them up on the field sometimes. Fun to watch.

Is it just me, or is it tragic that a sign-stealing scandal involving a major P5 program had to happen before FBS programs were permitted to utilize in-helmet comms?

Helmet comm was already on the road to approval before the Michigan controversy. It was tested in bowl season.

Patrick Mahomes does this with Kelce. Brady used to do it with Gronkowski. How do you think two guys get open so easily, so often? They just run to an open spot, Mahomes or Brady get's it there, and they run for 40 yards. It's backyard football.
