That one hurts. DLine was much better under Cabral. He also seemed to be great on the recruiting trail.

GO APPS!!

Need NIL for coaches, not players.

NIL for coaches instead of players? They get a salary. Schools with higher budgets will always be able to pay more

Whatever you call it we just need to pay more. We are never going to keep anyone for long outside of Clark if we don't. We pay peanuts on the football side compared to any P5 and some G5s.

The normal salaries we pay aren’t working. Is NIL for coaches an option? Obviously we can continue to donate and fund, but would be cool to be able to fund salary pools for coaches as well.

Continuing to donate allows the coaches salary pool to continue to increase. The less the athletic department has to subsidize to give our student athletes a top notch experience, the more they can pay coaches -- across the board.

Giving to a coaches salary pool is putting a band aid on the real issue and not fixing anything. It's no secret our brand attracts top coaching talent across the board -- not just football. Allowing donations for a specific coaching salary pool is more of a slippery slope than paying players, in my opinion. How do you say Vic Cabral should get X amount of money from the donation pool but Alex Frazier (women's hoops assistant coach) shouldn't? That will drive talented coaches away faster than a low salary -- again, in my opinion.

I’m not happy about Cabral’s departure either, but it happens and we should all expect it.

App is a place where guys want to coach ball. So we reload, we move forward.

The data is old, but likely even more skewed in favor of the big boys now. According to AthleticDirectorU.com, the mean salary of a college football assistant coach in the Autonomy 5 is $413,378 with the median salary of $350,000. The mean salary of a G5 assistant coach is $141,527, with a median salary of $125,00. That is a big mountain to climb when you multiply by 10x.

I wonder if we could pull someone up from the FCS rankings, like a successful DC, that would still see a significant pay/resume bump by coming to App? Florida A&M had a top defense, ran by someone who has SEC ties. Just a thought.

How can we do this and ignore the one thing that would prevent such a move?

All HC’s maintain a list of solid candidates to backfill potential openings on their staff. They can’t afford not to, especially in this day and age.

More $$$ for our assistants is always a good way to ensure a degree of increased continuity, but we shouldn't fret too much over losing someone to a P5. In fact, it shows that the health of the program is good. Now, if we are losing coaches to other G5s, that's where we have a problem.

NIL is specific to players in that until recently, they couldn't do endorsements. Coaches have always had the option of signing endorsement deals to supplement income. I hate to see Cabral (or any of our good coaches) leave, but the fact that our budget limits us isn't a new development.

Congrats to Vic!

Hated reading this news though, big loss for the D. Thought the D-line took a huge leap forward with VC. Our kids became friends during their short stint in the high country. My kids are going to be disappointed when I break the news. :(
