Well he's got two years left. I guess he is OK being the back up for at minimum a year. He will get 2025 to beat out everyone for the starting spot which I guess is his goal. If anything he should be a good insurance policy.

Congratulations to App. St.
Always nice to have a competitive QB locker room.

Indeed. I hope Wilson wins the job in 2025 simply so we are set for a little while at QB. I am wondering if McHugh stays after spring if Wright is our number 2 for 2024 though.

Not really that interesting. Wilson isn’t ready. McHugh likely isn’t either at this point in time. We have a team that can compete for the playoff next year and this provides insurance as well as a solid QB for 2025 to bridge the gap if Wilson or McHugh aren’t quite ready.

He’s unproven. He has the Texas pedigree but hasn’t played. Will be new to the system. There are guys out there that have experience if that’s what we were looking for. Hopefully he just needs the opportunity ( but just not next year )

Same could have been said of Aguilar. He had more on-field experience but it was JuCo. I think he’ll be a big help as a capable backup.

These are the kind of guys you want on your team whether they play or not.

It could be. But it would be a stretch.

I don't think he comes in as QB2 automatically. He's only played in three games and has to learn the system. I think it is a good pick up but I don't think there are any guarantees.

Are there ever?

Never any guarantees. You earn what you get here. We essentially had two weeks to find a QB willing to backup Aguilar in 2024. That’s not easy. I think experience was a desirable trait but not a necessity given these circumstances. He also seems to be a high character guy and a great teammate. Even better.

This also continues to show the strength of our brand on a national level. A backup QB at Texas is willing to be a backup QB at App State with no guarantees for 2025.

To be fair, he was QB4 behind Ewers, Murphy and Manning.

Reality stinks many times in life. It must really stink for lots of athletes in high levels of sports. There aren't but so many starting quarterback gigs and many guys believe (understandably so) that they are good enough. It's a huge leap from high school to college and so many high school studs simply aren't it.

What do some of you guys know that tells you that our current players behind Joey aren't good enough to play? Some seem to know that our current backup guys aren't good enough and that we must have a portal transfer- who never played.

It may not be that they aren’t good enough as much as it is that you need to mitigate the risks of a massive drop off from 1 to 2. McHugh hasn’t played a down in football in three years. The new kid doesn’t have much experience either. So you can look at it from the standpoint that they are competing for the #2 position. Competition breeds results. Maybe they make each other a better #2. We will see.

I saw this quote the other day. It’s the coaches responsibility to look for, recruit, and bring in a better player than the current one. It’s the players responsibility to keep the new guy on the bench.

Similar resume as Burger, but from a P5, a player that wouldn’t have given APP 2 sheets recruiting look out of high school. Since the rules have morphed and we can help make a living with the portal I hope he’s highly successful at APP because it may help get future players of this pedigree on both sides of the ball. Not sure we’ve had many players with his HS billing or that would be signed by programs like Texas.

Wright was ranked in the top 25 dual threat QBs out of HS. Running the scout team for a program like Texas isn't bad experience to bring. He's experienced at learning new looks quickly and has probably taken more practice snaps than QB2. The more I learn, the better Wright looks as a n addition to our QB room. Whether he ever starts or not, he will improve the room in my opinion.

How does the QB practice typically work? Obviously your starter takes a great majority of the first team reps and then your number 2 does some but limited. I'm more interested in the 3 and 4. Which one is typically your scout team QB? If this guy was running the scout team did he see the Texas first team defense in meaningful situations in practice? How does his practice differ from the 3rd stringer? I'm sure he had a great high school career and in Texas many higher level games are about like small college. I agree with one of the last comments. Before the portal no way a highly recruited kid in Texas even knows about App State. If he's not at Texas there is A&M, Tech, Baylor or Houston.

Every QB coach does it different. I believe it was Ponce in an interview (could very likely be one of the other 367482 QB coaches we've had lately though) that said he prefers the 1s take 99% of the practice reps with the 2s and 3s taking sideline reps and reps behind LOS with Ponce to see if they see the same reads as the starter.

And then obviously the 3s are also prepping for scout team stuff too.
