Bowl Talk
I know there has been bowl discussion in other threads - Thought we might be able to keep updates in one place - Hopefully ---
I saw earlier that someone had listed several bowls that had already been canceled - please keep us updated if possible -
I know others will have questions - one that comes immediately to me - If several ranked and/or P5 teams determine they don't want to or can't adhere to certain bowl tie-ins would ESPN (like they just did to save CCU) step in and determine that a team like APP (if we remain covid free) would be a good fit in a P5 matchup bowl? And would the SBC allow it?

Re: Bowl Talk
My gut tells me that all of the bowl games except the playoffs will get cancelled. Why on earth do you eliminate non-conference games in most P5’s but allow for travel after the season to play in either empty or virtually empty stadiums for what amounts to a needless game? I completely understand the entire reward aspect but even this year the bowls have said that they would forget records. A 2 win team gets “rewarded “ with a bowl game? Are schools going to fly down, play and fly back the same day? What happens, for example, if Oklahoma is supposed to play Florida in the Sugar Bowl but two days prior there is an outbreak at either school but one of them is good? In the same scenario App was supposed to play a week prior but their opponent also had an outbreak so that Camelia Bowl wasn’t played. Does the Sugar Bowl look for a replacement team, say App? The outbreak/cancellation is bound to happen. It happens daily now. No way 20 some bowl games get played without a hitch.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 2:01 pmI know there has been bowl discussion in other threads - Thought we might be able to keep updates in one place - Hopefully ---

Re: Bowl Talk
I am not questioning you at all - I think you are probably pretty close to right - but --- my question is this - In a season when every program has lost big money - what if ESPN, the individual bowl, whomever the powers to be are, would say ...... OK Florida we will pay both you and Oregon ??? (10 million) all expenses paid to come to Dallas to play? - I have no idea, just throwing that out there ---

Re: Bowl Talk
I remember back in the spring a few posters making fun people for talking about the upcoming season, because it was never going to be played. We will see what happens soon enough.

I refuse to think about the future at all. Every week we should only focus on going 1-0. That goes for players, coaches, fans, and random internet commenters. #BeatETSU

Re: Bowl Talk
I think the existence of bowls this year will be a on a state by state basis and it will depend on who sponsors/runs each bowl. I think it will be more than just the playoffs that happen but local and state politics will play their part. It will also be up to individual teams to accept bowl bids and that may also come down to which states they are from and if their state puts a travel ban on state organization travel. There will be a lot of moving parts to making the decisions this year. Money talks, so we will see how loud it yells.

Re: Bowl Talk
I think it comes down to this: Bowls tied to local CofC's won't go as tickets will not cover expenses. ESPN bowls will go, they dont care about tix but need inventory for advertisers. I doubt they care where the game is played, just who will get them eyeballs for commercials. I'm sure they know who will provide those eyeballs and will schedule those games or bowls accordingly. I would doubt tie ins matter at this point.

Re: Bowl Talk
In yesteryear, outside of the Rose, Cotton and Orange very few Bowls had automatic tie-ins. Bowls would court teams, teams would court Bowls and (I believe) just like recruiting a Bowl would offer an invitation with no guarantee that it would be accepted.appdaze wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 3:52 pmI think the existence of bowls this year will be a on a state by state basis and it will depend on who sponsors/runs each bowl. That could be what happens this year. ESPN will be desperate for programming (Especially if the NBA balks coming out of the gate and NCAA men's basketball games continue to have COVID-cancellations.) It could be that if a team of App's caliber is willing to play, they get invited to play another team that is willing to play. Programs with late COVID outbreaks, may simply shut down. No guarantees that it will work out this way, but it's possible.
Fortunately, we have Governor Cooper in our corner

Re: Bowl Talk
ESPN needs programming during the holidays, it's the entire reason so many lower tier bowls exist. I think there will be some form of bowl season...but maybe it is also wishful thinking...I enjoy the bowl season and all of the games starting before Christmas thru new years day.
But app kicks off game #10 tomorrow night, which I would have thought impossible back in August....so everything else is gravy. If there are no issues and we are able to finish game #11 vs Ga. Southern, I will be extremely satisfied and consider it a successful season, bowl or no bowl. (Especially if we win these last 2)

Re: Bowl Talk
Here is the latest I could find on bowl cancellations -
The Las Vegas Bowl is the 10th bowl game canceled because of the pandemic; the Bahamas, Celebration, Fenway, Hawaii, Holiday, Motor City, Pinstripe, Redbox and Sun bowls are the others.
The Pac-12 has now lost four bowl games with which it had tie-ins; the Holiday, Redbox and Sun are the others.

Re: Bowl Talk
Couldn't find but did not look really hard, does anyone know who owns these bowls? I think it will come down to state and local restrictions for the locations.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Fri Dec 04, 2020 10:06 amHere is the latest I could find on bowl cancellations -

Re: Bowl Talk
I’m on the selection committee for Dukes Mayo here in Charlotte. I think each bowl has unique challenges and just because one bowl cancels or another guarantees they will play, doesn’t necessarily impact other bowls.
Outside of ESPN, sponsors, fans, players and coaches also want bowl games. I think everyone is more willing to be fair and flexible to try their best to make it happen.
We meet weekly to discuss potential matchups. We also talk about state regulations etc I can say it has never been mentioned that our bowl will be cancelled.

Thanks - when you have discussions about match-ups - are you allowed/open to discussing match-ups that aren't ACC vs SEC/Big10CharlotteApp05 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 04, 2020 12:37 pmI’m on the selection committee for Dukes Mayo here in Charlotte. Re: Bowl Talk
This is a Big 10 year so early on CCU, App, Marshall among others were discussed.
But as the year unfolds it appears the Big 10 will fill their spot.
However, the most common buzz word this year is "Horse Trading". As in...As we get closer to bowl game announcements we expect to do some Horse Trading. I imagine it will mainly be about teams traveling to closer locations in order to keep the trips as short as possible, but you definitely could see some teams play in games they ordinarily would not.
I know it is getting close, but dominos have not begun to fall yet, so no Horse Trading has come up.

OK, we will take Heels in Charlotte since they scheduled Charlotte to duck us earlier this year.. Poetic Justice.CharlotteApp05 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 04, 2020 2:40 pmThis is a Big 10 year so early on CCU, App, Marshall among others were discussed.
