Bowl Projections

Unread post by CharleyHustle » Tue Sep 24, 2019 9:18 pm

It seems CBS (Jerry Palm) and ESPN ( Bonagura and Schlabach) are not impressed with the 2019 Mountaineers. According to their Week 4 matchups, the three prognosticators have placed Louisiana and Arkansas State in the New Orleans Bowl while sending App to Mobile on January 6.
Evidently, beating UNC didn't provide the required evidence and more proof is needed. Maybe a thorough whipping of CCU will change their minds.

Fortunately, proof is not required to go to the New Orleans Bowl. Should we win the Championship Game, we are automatically invited to the New Orleans Bowl (unless a NY6 Bowl extends an invite). Hence, all the evidence that is needed is a repeat of last year's conference championship.

Agreed. My point is, at this time, they don't think we're capable of winning the championship.

Beating CCU alone won't do it. Who cares what they think? We know what we expect and what our team expects. We just need to keep going 1-0 and whether they predict it or not we will win the SBC. All that matters now is #BeatCoastal!

It just shows they are paying lip service to G5 and Sun Belt and haven't done any research at all.

They likely have no idea that the Sun Belt winner goes to New Orleans.

I kept hearing that setup from last year was only for last year. In other words, the Sun Belt winner won't necessarily go to New Orleans this year. Am I remembering correctly?

Agreed. But honestly, Mobile would not be a bad alternative from a brand recognition stance. A bowl game on Jan 6th with no other options for football fans would potentially put more eyes on us than a late start bowl game on Dec 21st.

Per the bowl website, the game is "played between the Sun Belt conference champions and a team from Conference USA". So I'm assuming that the announcement last year of the Belt champ getting that as their bowl will hold true for the foreseeable future.

It is my understanding that the Sun Belt Champion goes to the R & L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. These bowl gurus know about bowl tie ins and placements. They don't think App football will finish higher than Louisiana and/or Arkansas State this year. I think we will, but it will be settled on the field before very long. This just provides incentive for our fans and football team. Go Mountaineers!!!

Forget not having us there, what have they seen in Arkansas State that would make them think they'd be there? I guess they don't play us this year and 3 of their toughest 4 games are home games. I just don't see them even making the SunBelt championship game. They'd likely have to go 3-1 against UL, Coastal, GaSo and Troy, in addition to not having any hick-ups against lesser competition.

Go back to last year’s bowl predictions that were made in Sept. Almost all of them were wrong. Why bite?

Its too early for bowl predictions, we're just getting into conference play.

My guess is they see Jan 6th and think that is the most prestigious bowl game for SBC. They likely don’t know about the NO bowl tie in with conf champion. I know if we were not in the SBC, that is what I’d think. The later in the year the more significant the bowl.

This makes sense. And honestly, I think it might be the best option to get more eyes on us to increase the brand.
