Nate Woody (Wofford DC) to App?

Todd Shanesy from Spartanburg paper tweeted out this morning that Wofford's Defensive Coordinator, Nate Woody, has been offered the same position with App. Hasn't officially accepted yet. Don't know much about him, but he's fielded competitive defenses with far less talent than we have had on our roster.

Hoping it isn't a situation where he's been encouraged to seek pastures new by Ayers. He's been their DC for 12 years.

What I am hoping is that this means Coach Satterfield's been given an increased budget for hiring assistants. And - for the Dale Jones haters, looks like you're getting your wish!

Nate Woody Profile

It says that he also coaches inside linebackers, which could open the door for Dale Jones to go back to coaching the defensive line after the departure of Blalock. If he turns out to be the guy, it would be a great hire that would almost certainly improve our ability to defend the option.

With as good as their defenses have been, I highly doubt that Ayers is encouraging him to go elsewhere based on performance. However, for what it's worth, I have a good friend who played for Coach Ayers at Wofford and he told me that he will be retiring in the coming years.

It is possible that he is looking for other opportunities in the event that a new coach comes in and does not retain the current staff, but that is purely speculation on my part.

Coach Ayers said he will meet with Woody late this afternoon and it looks like he's going to App State but would try to talk him out of it.

Further evidence that we are moving up, otherwise I wouldnt see him coming to ASU.

I agree unless we can just pay him more. He played at Wofford and has been on the coaching staff for 22 years -- 12 as the DC. It's hard to think he would just leave the school simply for more money unless its a considerable amount more or something else is involved.

Does anyone have any stats on what wooford's defense has accomplished during Woody's tenure. If he ends up being the DC, I hope he has more success with App than what we did to wooford on halloween when we put up 70 on them.

Well...as I said...he was doing it with considerably less talent. I don't believe Wofford had any D players even get on an NFL roster, whereas we've had several.

And that offense, when healthy, could score 70 on most FCS D's!

Also, I believe their offense turned the ball over 3+ times that night.

SoCon defensive ranks

2012: #1 scoring defense, #1 total defense (ASU: #6 scoring defense, #8 total defense)
2011: #5 scoring defense, #2 total defense (ASU: #4 scoring defense, #5 total defense)
2010: #2 scoring defense, #1 total defense (ASU: #3 scoring defense, #4 total defense)

The 2008-2009 Wofford defenses struggled but he has really tightened them up since. Three consecutive years with a top 2 total defense in the SoCon is pretty impressive.

This season, we gave up 106 yards per game more than Wofford. Considering the talent we have, that is astounding. He would be a great hire, IMO. Armanti made a lot of good defensive coordinators look bad, lest we forget what he did to the Russ Huesman coached Richmond defense in 2007.

My only concern is that he's going from coaching a D that gets help from a ball control O, to a D playing with a hurry-up O. Very different things.

That said, the fact that Ayers is trying to keep him makes me think we're getting a great hire.

So, I guess we're sticking with the 3-4 then. That's what Wofford runs

Thanks for the information! I agree, with the talent we have had on D, their is no reason why we shouldn't have been the top ranked defense in the SOCON year over year. One would think that if Woody had this success with lesser talent, that he could replicate it or even improve on those rankings he had while at wooford. If this guy can make these improvements, we should roll next year with all of the weapons we have on the offensive side of the ball.

He who manages with a little can manage with a lot....or something like that.

Wofford fans are shocked and saddened by this news. This is quite the get for Satterfield.

Also getting someone with recruiting knowledge of SC. We seemed to have dropped off in that area the last couple of years.

52 years old with the last 22 years at Wofford. Seems like a strange time to move. Perhaps childern are off to college and moved away.

he has fairly young kids for his age on about a 15 and the other 11 or so. I think it boils down to money and maybe seeing writing on wall that he had hit a ceiling.

Oh Please, please, please, be so!!!!!

My pastor is the most obnoxious Wooferd fan I know and has been rubbing my nose in it for two years now...

Awesome hire for App. Wofford's D has always been very disciplined and very good despite having inferior talent. Satterfield is building a monster of a program.

I go to church with Coach Woody's sister and brother-in-law. I've never met him, but they assure me that he is intense beyond belief on the field and a prince of a guy off the field. He as been approached by several other SoCon programs in the past but has never really pursued those opportunities.

I'm like other posters, I think this is a good sign that a move up announcement is coming very soon. Otherwise, why would he leave Wofford? I don't think we are going to pay him much more that Wofford is paying now, unless a FBS move is close at hand. In the meantime, you have someone who knows the landscape of the SoCon and won't need any additonal study/prep time to get up to speed for the SoCon offenses we will face during the 2013 season.

Also, tons of talent in the Upstate and nice to have someone that can recruit here that knows the HS coaches well.

Keeping fingers crossed this happens. Chow,
