Apples and Oranges

Unread post by bigdaddyg » Sun Sep 02, 2018 8:41 am

There should be a consensus agreement to stop comparing our FCS level teams and their results versus P5’s to our current team. No comparison at all. We obviously have stepped up with the overall talent level. I am sure we have guys on our bench who would have started 10-11 years ago easily. I should have known what the Big10 Network announcers would say yesterday (time and time again) about “the Michigan game”. It was a great accomplishment but it is tiring to hear every freaking time we play “a big boy”. I truly believe we are close if not already at the high G5 level. Heck there are probably 20 P5’s that we could take down now- Carolina, Wake, Kentucky, etc. It’s all different and great now. Our challenge now is to sustain and improve each week and each season. I’m excited!

That's church right there.... Michigan was phenomenal at the time and fun to enjoy and recall, but it's a part of history. These players were in middle school back then and they're creating their own legacy for our Mountaineers!
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

I will never get tired of hearing about Michigan. It was a once in a lifetime thing that no other school has experienced and likely will not experience. I still get chills at the site of it and the sound of DJ's call. There is no reason to wish it away. Plus, most announcers will now distinguish that we were FCS then but are now FBS. Of course, they still pronounce Appalachian wrong, and that's where the true crime is at.

I totally agree about the tired "Michigan" references but overall I thought the Big10Net guys (Kevin Kugler and Matt Millen) were extremely respectful of and mightily impressed by our team, our players (individually), our talent level, our coaching staff/schemes and our fans. In particular Millen, a former Penn State and Oakland Raiders star LB, was extremely complimentary of our players and of S.Satterfield. He had detailed knowledge of our roster and the attributes of many of our players. He singled out and praised more of our players than he did his Nittany Lions.

My biggest complaint is that Kugler struggled with "App-uh-latch-un" three or four times. Enuff times that I was yelling at the screen.

Despite the outcome, I'll watch the Big10Net replay. I became a Matt Millen fan yesterday.

Millen frustrated me a couple times when we got a big play, and he pointed out a Penn State flaw, rather than praise our execution, but I had to remind myself that I was watching a game on their network and not on ESPN. Both announcers reverted to Appalayshun toward the end, but I’m sure they were both excited and fatigued. If you’ve been pronouncing something one way all your life, and have to forcefully pronounce it another way, it is probably what slips when you get tired. I do feel there are some broadcasters who mispronounce our name out of spite (Marshall loved to use Appy), but I don’t think this was the case here.

Appellation is a wine growing region in France.

I don't get mad when northerners pronounce Appalachian that way, as it is their dialect. At least they made an effort to pronounce it right for the first 3 quarters.

Honestly, our game was the most competitive game on yesterday, and it's good to know we made a few more fans out of the rest of the country. I think this team has officially turned the page to become a premier G5 team in the country.

I thought Millen was going to be unbearable at first, but he was complimentary to App, especially the LB's and Stout. Loved the pic of him as a PSU player. Millen was a bull.

The Michigan game was mentioned to me several times this weekend while in State College. The funny thing as most refer to it as just happening “a few years ago”. If it’s still that fresh in their minds I don’t correct them!
