Head Coach - Blind Taste Test

Just doing some noodling around on the 'net this afternoon, and thought I'd pose this question. I'm going to describe a real coach, without his name, and you tell me if App should give him a look:
D2 Head Coach since 2010
26-1 in his last 27 Games, only loss being in National Semis Last Year
34-3 Overall in 3 Seasons
Head Coach with ties to Fayetteville - a rich recruiting area
African-American - which may help with some recruits
12 Year Career in Arena Football League (Not NFL, but still)
Coaches 90 minutes away from Boone
Trying to get the first ever CIAA Team to D2 Championship this Saturday
Only 39 Years Old

Many of you NC guys may know him, but being that I live in Atlanta, it's the first I'd heard of him. Don't know if he's the right guy - but seems like he should get an interview.

If this is the coach at WSSU, I'd probably pass. Good record for D2, but had issues in D1 (I'm sure that was related as much to resources as anything). Probably not the guy to take us FBS.

He's only been there since '10. First year was 8-2...then 13-1, and sits at 13-0 in '12. If WSSU wins Saturday and makes the D2 Title game, they'll be the first HBCU to ever do that at that level.

Ydon't forget his role in a major motion picture. He played the QB action shots for Jamie Foxx in Any Given Sunday.

No they must have experience at the FBS level.

Successful, but not at the right level. I'd think that his next stop would be at an FCS school not looking to move up.

I get that part, but if that's not imminent, this is the kind of guy we need. A winner.
If we have an offer to move up in hand, though, we should be talking to good FCS coaches and FBS coordinators.

I will add this to the conversation though - Brian Kelly went from Grand Valley State to Notre Dame in 7 short seasons. He went from D2 GVSU straight to Central Michigan, and took a program that had gone 12-34 in the 4 years prior, and won the MAC in his 3rd Season.
Just posting this to point out that, if you can coach, you can coach. Tressel went from YSU to OSU and won the National Title in his 2nd year - and many of their fans weren't that pleased with the hire because they thought he couldn't take the step up. WSSU to ASU is a much smaller step than that...or even GVSU to CMU...

Big difference with Brian Kelly is he did it for 12 season and proved he could do it with not just the guys he was given but also the guys he recruited. We have no idea how he recruites as he had been doing it with the previous coaches guys.

Little unfair to say that. By year 3 - the team is 75% yours - probably more considering how many D2 schools rely on transfers and Jucos, and that WSSU likely lost quite a few players when they aborted their move to FCS.
The team was a combined 4-18 in the 2 years prior to Maynor's arrival. So - they went from 1-10 in 2009 to 13-1 in 2011. Pretty impressive.
You could use the same argument about Kelly at CMU - he was only there 3 years - or him now at ND. I don't think anyone is arguing for Charlie Weis (1-10 at KU this year) to get the credit there...
I will say this is probably a moot argument, as we seem to be conducting a "national search" just to discover the guy we wanted was in Boone all along! Funny how that always seems to happen to us.

Heck my resume is strong! He and I both can't coach at this level or the one we are going to.
