Worst play called ---

Just for discussion purposes - what is the worst offensive play call you have seen - Now I have been critical of our call of the jet sweep on 3rd and 2 but not the worst I can remember ---

I would guess that most would put the Seattle pass on 1st down on the one in the Super Bowl as a Top 5 - As a Patriots fan I was happy with that call :D

From my own experience - years ago as a defensive coordinator in high school we were playing a conference opponent and it was a close game in the 4th Q - they took over the ball on about their own 10 and proceeded to drive down the field - 6-8-10 yds at a time - Over the headset I told my guy in the box, "We can't stop them" - they drove all the way to our 3 yard line and for whatever reason tried a pass which we intercepted in the end zone - I then said to my guy, "That's the worst call I have ever seen!!!" :? :D --- there was no way we could have stopped them from the 3 unless they turned the ball over ---

Joe Burchette on the option keeper against Maine in the 2002 playoffs.

Tough to beat this one. Maybe JMU not kicking the field goal in 2007, but go for 2 will always be tops.

Coach, speaking of HS, I see our WA Warriors still own Alamance county and the Conference!

Atlanta Falcons against Patriots SB last year after Jones catch deep into Pats territory not running it and running it and then if needed send in your rock solid kicker to win the SB. That is example of bad play calling. Oh, also sweep on 3 and 2 Saturday.

Yes, this game reminds me of another - Burchette's pass out of our own end zone into a freezing cold strong win - APP was in control of that game until this play which was intercepted and turned the entire game around ---
And for those of you who complain/question our crowds there was maybe 3000 people there that day ---

The run wasn't a bad decision. It would have ran the clock down and centered the ball.

Having a freshman backup RB do it was the bad decision.

I think Mickey the Mouth got greedy - he wanted to score a TD, if not why not just have the QB take the snap to the desired spot and take a knee?

2011 at Wofford. Brian Quick, who was nine inches taller than the CB on him, wasn't targeted until the fourth quarter when the game was already over. I still remember the Bronx Cheer his one catch got.

September 20, 2014 Hattiesburg, MS. Satt elects to attempt a PAT to tie the score with 2:16 left. So Miss's D was totally gassed and could not stop Marcus Cox, at all. Our inexperienced kicker, that later went on to be a fine one, had already missed two FGs, plus had one blocked, is sent on the field and the PAT is blocked. Marcus watches from the sideline.

I have long heard you don't play for a tie (OT) on the road. Why we put that game's fate on the foot of a then inexperienced kicker having a really rough night, trying to get to OT in a road game, instead of relying on our stud running back to pick up a 2 point conversion and win in regulation, is among the very few coaching decisions I have questioned in the post-Moore era.

IMO, it set us back four ugly weeks with losses that night to So Miss, then the stink, followed by USA, and finally Liberty. That's why I consider it the worst play called for App that I have ever experienced.

I forget the year but it was Joe Burchette and the gumroots in Boone. We had 4th and a chain link from their 2 yard line. Burchette was what, 6'5" and 235? Our center was all SoCon and about 300 lbs. Should have been a QB sneak and 1st down. Instead the call was FB blast for a 2 yard loss. The entire section where we were sitting turned and looked at the pressbox as if to say "WTF?"

That was certainly not our "BEST" call on offense. ;)

I was there and remember the conditions that day! It was not the coldest day that I have spent in KBS but maybe the windiest! If I recall, there were sustained winds in the 30mph range with gusts over that. I went with my father in law (old Citadel grad from '56) and he just about froze solid.

Running up the middle on 3rd and 20.

The truth is that almost any of the "brilliant gutsy" calls that coaches have made to win unlikely games would be on the list of "worst calls ever" if they hadn't worked. Let's be honest, even the "Go for 2" call that Bobby Lamb made was a statistically solid decision. The likelihood of the pass being intercepted and returned all the way for a 2 point conversion is INCREDIBLY low...and yet....it happened! That's why we call it the MIRACLE on the mountain.

When, where, why? --- I'm guessing with a lead late in the game running up the middle on 3rd and 20 and then letting Sam Martin punt would not be what you are referring to? :)
