#14 Just thinking ahead?
This is meant as a question? At some point it is likely that AE's #14 will be retired... so what if Sean Price burns up the record book over the next three years. Then we have two #14 to honor, can't retire the same number twice? Any thoughts?

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
It irritates me to no end that 14 hasn't already been retired.
Armanti should have been honored during his bye week his first year with the Panthers.
Hell, I'll be first in line to anti up for a AE statue in front of KBS.

Retiring numbers is never a good idea IMO. I love AE and he has set records we will NOT see broken for years....However, I would not "retire" his number. We have the makings of a ring of honor but where does it stop. How many numbers can you retire and what is criteria. Without Kevin Richardson we do not win either championship in 06 or 07. Do we retire his jersey.RockCampAPP wrote:This is meant as a question? I say HONOR the number...create a "ring" of honor....but do not RETIRE anything.

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
Price will no doubt be one of the all-time greats if he maintains this level of performance IMO.
Question = I know Larry Hand, John Settle, Dino Hackett, & Dexter Coakley all have their names on the walls at The Rock and they are in App's Hall of Fame, but does that indicate that are their numbers are retired? are they the only ones?
When I think about it, I don't remember seeing anyone wearing #38 in a long time....but I sure do remember when Dino did. I think he was in on almost all every defensive play during every year when I was at App.

I love the idea of retiring numbers. As a UNC basketball fan, and looking in the Dean Dome at the retired numbers (Jordan, Worthy, Hansbrough, etc,) gives me chills. But what is the criteria? That's a good question. For UNC basketball the criteria is winning the National Player of the Year award. I would love to see some retired numbers here, but I am the first to say that I don't know what the criteria should be

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
I do believe Monte Smith wore #38 (Bandit LB) during some of the Championship years. However, I agree about not retiring the numbers. I do think Armanti deserves some recognition, whether in the form of a statue or having his name on the wall at The Rock. And it needs to happen soon..

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
In my opinion you can ceremoniously retire as many numbers, even some more than once, as you like.RockCampAPP wrote:This is meant as a question? As for retiring Armanti's #14, I think it is somewhat impulsive to "retire" his number this soon. It should be done in the twilight of his next level career and/or sometime later on down the line... Share the love and give the fans a chance to honor and remember the player when memories of his accomplishments start to dull. Why get it all over now? Let it age a little...
It also might mean a little more to the former player to be honored when they are no longer "in the spotlight"...
Just my two cents...

First off, I give you props for admitting you're a UNC fan here...jtunc23 wrote:asutrnr81 wrote:Retiring numbers is never a good idea IMO. Second, I hope you're an ASU basketball fan first--if you went to ASU.
Third, I don't believe all of the jerseys in the rafters at the Dean Dome are retired numbers (i.e., can't be used again), though some are. I think they "retire" the jersey for a lot of the players. I think this is probably the best thing for ASU to do, utilizing a "ring of honor" type display. With that said, if they decide to do something like that, AE should be at the front of the line followed closely by Richie and KRich. BTW, wasn't there supposed to be an AE highlight video like 2 years ago?

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
Looking at the roster, no one has 23, 32 or 38. I assume those are the only ones that are retired (not sure what Larry Hand's # is).
I like the ring of honor idea better since you could potentially have multiple great players using the same # before it would be retired

Larry Hand was #71. I dont think anyone wears it either. I do like the Ring of Honor too. Looks like we are already running out of numbers.mtnjax wrote:Looking at the roster, no one has 23, 32 or 38. I assume those are the only ones that are retired (not sure what Larry Hand's # is).

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
As a semi-hijacking of this thread: I have a black jersey from 1970 that has gold trim on the sleeves and a gold #78. This jersey is really old school with no holes or mesh to it. It was used as a practice jersey during the Brakefield years. Does anyone from that era have a program that lists who #78 was?
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Don't worry, we wish you would've gone there, too.

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
Fourteen is a popular number for quarterbacks, and my only concern is that we could lose a recruit because that number is taken out of the mix. I'd love to retire 7, 28, and 47 as well as 14, but not if it could cost us another potential Walter Payton (Heisman?
) award winner down the road.

Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
scatman-I believe that #78 was Linny Wrenn-Played 69-71 or 72. I'll try and dig out a couple of old programs to confirm that. He coached HS football in Durham later. I think there is even a stadium named after him (maybe Riverside High School?). Dusting off some old memories here. I'll double check that since it was before my time as a student but as I said in another post I've been going to App games since I was in diapers.scatman77 wrote:As a semi-hijacking of this thread: I have a black jersey from 1970 that has gold trim on the sleeves and a gold #78. Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
You know, that is an argument that I haven't seen made yet. And it's a good one. Kids like their numbers. I try to tell my church basketball players to not worry about what number they get and to make the one get the one others want insteat of wanting someone else's. For those who may not think it's important imagine a coach being able to tell a prospect that not only will he be able to wear the number he wants but he is worthy of wearing the number of such a great former App. Also imagine the effect on a player who looks at a ring of honor and sees the number that he's wearing up there with the name of the former great who wore. I'd imagine it would pump me up a pretty good bit. I like the idea of making numbers special rather than not allowing them to be worn again.AppinVA wrote:Fourteen is a popular number for quarterbacks, and my only concern is that we could lose a recruit because that number is taken out of the mix. Re: #14 Just thinking ahead?
I don't particularly like retiring numbers but do feel a ring of honor would be great. Also special honors (statue or something) for AE and DexC would be appropriate since both won the top player National Honors twice.
