Anybody have a wild guess what it costs to play in the game and about how much we end up getting from the pool? I'm sure it ends up costing us to play but when you consider taking all the players, coaches, band and everyone else involved it has to get pricey. Do we cover food for everyone each day?

Our costs will be covered by the combined payouts from all bowls. How much we make will be determined by how well everyone does with selling their tickets. This is one reason why having teams go to the best locations for them is so important instead of sending teams to a pre-determined location based on order of finish. The ticket sales by ULL, Troy and App will more than cover the allotment costs for those game which means we all get more money. Idaho playing in Boise should work out much better than them going to Arizona.

While I agree that we have some less than desirable bowl tie-ins, at least being able to bus the teams to locations is cheaper that chartered planes.

Makes me wonder how a team affords the Bahamas Bowl. It's been pointed out before but I believe every player and anyone else who goes must have a passport. Can the school pay for a player to have a passport? Is this a permissible expense? Do schools take bands. Seems like a ridiculous location for a game but obviously the most appealing for players.

I would imagine that if we flew the team down, it was on a chartered flight. I have no idea what that would cost but my guess is it would be more than the same number of tickets on a commercial flight. I could be wrong though.

I'm not in the aviation business so I can't speak to The reasonableness. However, it seems ridiculous. Given the proximity to Montgomery, 3 buses, for the football team seems more feasible. Plus I am old school, but a bus trip is a good way to spend the last moments together as a team.

I just googled flights from Charlotte D to Montgomery and it shows in the $660 range round trip- I just put in leaving on 12/14 returning on 12/17. Kind of pricey but I have no idea how charters work

Based on the resources that were available, I think that a charter price factors include fuel and the plane. The plane is an hourly rate and depending on the type of plane probably affects the rate. Without knowing the details, I would say that your earlier estimate seems pretty close to accurate.

Recent changes in passport rules have many U.S. Citizens confused about whether they need a passport to go to the Bahamas. On June 1st, 2009, the final phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) went into effect which means:

If you are traveling by plane, you must have a U.S. Passport.

If you are traveling by sea, you can use a passport book or one of the following documents:

passport card
trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card
enhanced driver’s license (only some states have these).
Please note that the passport card can only be used if you are traveling to the Bahamas by sea-it’s no valid for air travel.

We have taken a few cruises and did a bunch of research regarding passport requirements prior to going. I think that basically if the cruise is a closed loop (leave and come back to the same port) you generally don't need a passport. Like you point out maybe just an ID or even a passport card. Our dilemma was concerning the possibility of health needs. If you need a hospital and you are in a foreign country and wish to fly home you must have a passport.

All that being said if ODU is including a cruise with the Bowl game that's hard to top.

A chartered 737 is going to be half that. I would bet we have a multi year contract with Sun Country since they fly us to all the other far away road trips. Which could pull the price down more.

Do teams generally take more players to Bowl Games?

I don't know if it's a 737-300 or a newer version, but there are plenty of seats for every player on the roster and the entire coaching staff. Easily 140 seats.

Keep in mind they head down on Tuesday and will come back Saturday after the game. The rest of the people traveling with the program will travel at varying times through the week. Some of the equipment staff is driving the truck.
