Re: Just to compare...
Seems like "back in the day" when they still played us in Winston that the App game was usually one of their highest attended games. We always brought a lot of people and of course it's a natural rivalry being so close to Boone and with so many App fans in the Winston area.

What a great series that I am excited to see start back up. I went to law school down at Wake and there was a barber shop on campus that had been there since the '60s. The old barber started talking to me about App one day. He said "LSU is known for its great food, Ole Miss has the prettiest blondes, UNC fans will cry about anything, but Appalachian has the drunkest, yet nicest fans I have ever met." I swelled with pride. He described an incident where he was walking through the parking lot to the game in Winston, a bunch of our yahoo fans were hanging out of the back of a pick-up truck yelling "we're going to kick yer asssss!" But he said they immediately followed that up by jumping down and asking him "can we interest you in a PBR and some food?" I said that sounds about right.

WF fans are just as excited as we are about the renewal of this natural rivalry. This is a stadium packer for both schools. I have had several WF friends ask me about our ticketing process already.

I also went to Wake Forest Law School. Class of '05. Small world.
And, I went to a number of the ASU/WFU games. I still recall the game (1998?) when WFU scored a TD in the last few seconds, to put them down by 1 and went for 2 to win the game. Their RB was dropped in the backfield by Avery Hall. App won! Incredible game.
Never went to that barber shop though.

That was a great game and Avery was a great player! He was also one of the game radio broadcasters for years alongside David Jackson. Really looking forward to the Deacs coming to The Rock next year! That's a great rivalry for us, I'm a CPA and have worked in the Triad most of my career and there are a lot of CPAs that are App grads here as well as Wake Forest CPAs in the area so it was a lot of fun. There's nothing like CPAs throwing out trash talk to each other...yeah baby!AppAlum1 wrote:MtnMan09 wrote:Rick83 wrote:Seems like "back in the day" when they still played us in Winston that the App game was usually one of their highest attended games. Nostalgia time: first meeting of the two in 1975. Freshman kicker Gary Davis kicked his first collegiate field goal to beat the Deacons 19-17. Good times....
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Just make sure the trash talk balances out.Rick83 wrote:That was a great game and Avery was a great player! He was also one of the game radio broadcasters for years alongside David Jackson. Just a slight correction....Garo was a sophomore during the 1975 season...and enjoyed a huge year as the team did!scatman77 wrote:Nostalgia time: first meeting of the two in 1975. Freshman kicker Gary Davis kicked his first collegiate field goal to beat the Deacons 19-17. Good times....

That's right....Jerry Harmon was a senior during Garo's freshman year. I do believe that the Wake field goal was in fact his first.

Garo lives less than a half mile from me though I rarely see him. He has had some health issues. I was at Groves when he made the kick and came pouring over the wall. Really. What a great night it was. And scatman, your mind and memory is fading fast among other things. C'mon man!

Cro-Magnon....I sense that I should know who you are but since my mind and memory are fading fast (as you stated!) reveal yourself!
That being said I've also heard from other sources that Garo has had health issues but I've not been given any details.
