I have to disagree. Thought the article was actually pretty good and made fair points.
Sure, the start of the article seems out of place until you read down further, but once you do, it actually reads like real journalism. A point that is usually missed during reporting of sports these days. Just check out any article on ESPN for some real doozies...

The writer's attempt to use economics is laughable. Sports/entertainment never follow the same rules as the purchase of a durable item. I think his criticism of the coaching staff is probably not out of line, but to discourage support of the team (via the title more than the article itself) in the home-town newspaper is a pretty crappy thing to do. Shuman was over his head, but he did ok for a true freshman and he needs the experience because he just might be their future (barring the signing of a stud QB). Ellison was injurred, so why does he ask "where was he?" Anybody who watched the game knew that.
I guess small town newspaper columnists have to make a living too, but I think a good bit of the article is in bad taste....especially the title.
