For me, it was easily the 52-28 loss to The Citadel at home in 2012. At least the Liberty game was close and we took it to overtime. The Citadel hadn't won in Boone in 20 years and it was 31-0 before halftime and was 45-7 in the third quarter.

NC A&T and Chuck South were both close games last year and both teams ended with strong records.
There are several bad recent losses, the worst loss in my opinion and a lynch pin one for the program was the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ loss.
Ask WVAPP, if you scratching you head on this one.

Fans of good programs talk about their bad occasional seasons and bad games. Fans of bad programs talk about their occasional good seasons and upsets.

The silver lining is that we're part of the former.

good posts- mostly depressing. There is pretty much a concesous that most of the program's worst losses have occured in the last 5 years. What is the biggest win since the win over Delaware to win the last championship? Hard to find one.

Although now ancient history, for many of us around in the late '70's, the worst loss in memory was the loss to the UTC Mocs in 1978, a whopping 72-14 shellacking. We gave up 795 yards total offense that night and the Mocs set several NCAA records running the wishbone on us. Luckily this butt kicking was away and not at home, at then Conrad Stadium. That loss left a sour taste in my mouth that remains to this day. But we Mountaineers are a gritty, determined bunch, who don't give up, and certainly don't whine when things get tough!

Speaking of losses to UTC the 2004 loss to them greatly resembled our recent to defeat to Liberty. Shootout with virtually no defense played, our DBs were constantly beat over the top on deep throws......

The "worst loss" for me was the semi-final loss at Montana in 2009 - It was an end of an era and that season should have ended with another National Championship - I was really sad after that game - more so than any other I can remember ---

As for "embarrassing loss" I would say VA Tech, Maine (2nd time), WCU (2004) and I would include Liberty (as mentioned, in reality it means nothing)

This is 'strangely' exactly my list

I went on a cruise right after that game and I always wear my App State stuff no matter where I'm going. Ran across a smartA$$ Maine fan on there. I wanted to throw his A$$ overboard.

Villanova loss was the first time "we are really small on the lines" was mentioned (that I can recall). That Siezure (sp) kid single-handedly tore us apart. That was one of those games where the Villanova coaches could have told our coaches the plays in advance and we still could not stop them. That was a brutal to watch. The VT games was awful because we simply didn't show up and didn't seem to try at all. I actually had the opportunity to go to the game. Ouch.

Far and away the worst in my experience. This was before political correctness ran amuck; and when the Mocs were indian warriors--not “Mockingbirds.” The Mocs' chief mascot in full headdress, loin-cloth and body paint, did his war dance and war chant at midfield before every UTC kickoff--about 12 times. Made me sick. SICK!

What a looooooong drive home on Sunday.

I can't recall if I was at that game or not. If that was a first rounder my gripe with the playoffs in those days was that we typically got a home game and typically it occurred on the Saturday after Thanksgiving- recipe for very small crowds. There would be almost no students, very few fans from the opposing school (especially Maine) and very few home folks. Getting stunned in a nearly empty stadium was rough.

I was at that '77 UTC game in 'Nooga. It is almost beyond belief and description. I promised myself I would never return to that Tennessee city and kept that promise until '05 ('06 and '07, also, of course).

I've seen some mighty bad App loses since 1970 but that '77 games is on my short list.

Judging by another thread I was just reading, I would say the loss of sanity by many (edit* some) of our fans is our greatest loss. It was reading like a political ad.
