What offense are we running? Serious question.

Sutton’s absence can’t be discounted.
Yes. As I've said many times here I think its the root cause. His absence combined with beating Troy, ULL, UAB & UNCC without him, COVID, a bit of an ego on the teams part given their success and a match up against a team like Marshal was a perfect recipe for a loss.

I'm glad it was Marshal and not anyone else on our schedule. That game means nothing considering we don't play a P5 and the BIG10 is back.

Played the last 3 games without him last year.
The offense we saw without Sutton last year was the same offense we saw against UNCC and Marshal. Suttons deep threat took up a corner and many times a Safety. Hennigan is an amazing talent but he, Virgil and Williams do not bring the same dynamic to the offense that Sutton did. With him no longer playing the safety is freed up for additional pass coverage or run blocking. As a team that uses that depends on play action this cannot be ignored.

Troy, ULL, UAB & UNCC all probably saw this deficiency in our offense, schemed for it but didn't or couldn't execute like Marshal did.
A healthy Virgil is certainly capable of stretching the field. I'm not sure why we haven't seen him used that way other than, maybe his hands aren't as good. That said, he pulled in a nice TD pass Saturday that wasn't an easy catch. I really hope he isn't injured.

Agreed. Probably why Clark has called him out twice now.

IMO, Sutton makes the deep route catch that Williams missed. We saw Sutton lay out to catch the pass in the end zone last year. This year Williams gets a paw on it but wasn't willing to lay out to put that extra effort required to make the catch. Sorry if this sounds harsh but it is reality and a really good comparison of the two players in basically the exact same situation.

Williams is a really good athlete playing receiver. Sutton is a polished , top-end college receiver.

"Not knowing where the ball is going" is my memory of the last 20 years of App football. I hope we get back to that type of offense real soon. If the ball is only going one place and the opposing coach did his homework, he only needs to be right 1 out of 3 times to make it hard to score. I do think we need a great quarter back coach and a good athlete at quarterback to run the spread with RPO options. If everyone does their job but the quarterback makes bad reads it would be a bad outcome.
