Part of it is the required TV timeouts after each possession change. You didn't see this in the socon because not every game was on ESPN3. You will see a guy with a headset and red vest standing on the field (Owens FH 20 yd line) with one of the officials and he will point and give the go ahead when the broadcast is live. One of there really interesting things is how scripted all the ads and other things are. They have each potential timeout/ possession change mapped out on a timeline. This always affected us in the band because there were times we couldn't play and had an athletics employee with a headset that would give the drum major the go when we could.

Yeah.. never been a fan of TV timeouts... especially when you are on a roll and the momentum is in your favor... might as well apply the parking break. The old man used to curse them in his UNC days... That aside... I get the revenue generation.. but at what cost to the fan experience being bombarded with yet more messaging for products. It just wears you out... I'm just saying...

TV timeouts are an FBS reality. I remember how much they annoyed me when App was on TV the few times each year in FCS, but now in FBS I've gotten use to them.

That's what I love about NASCAR on tv...you can't artificially pause a race to get in "a word from our sponsors". But...producing a game is expensive...you have to run ads to pay for it.T-Dog wrote:TV timeouts are an FBS reality. The people around me never stood up or got loud but stayed entire game and did not tell me to shut up so no problem with them. I respected their right to sit down in the seat they paid for and not have to look at my ass and back. They tolerated me standing up and cheering for big plays and getting loud when fitting. That is how it should work.HighlandsApp wrote:I was annoyed by people in the stands wearing AppState gear that:

4- Took selfies of them selves all night (these were Mid 50 to 60 year old women. It was excruciating)
No need to expand the stadium. All wee need are more club and luxury boxes and a larger and dryer overflow hill....

You must have been in 210, I was there and you are right, it was a boring group. Too many parents, not enough of us real fans. We left our seats when it started raining, but stayed and watched the game from under the stands. I was the one with the pompom in the air and standing for the fight song. Can't be there Thursday, in MD for work, but hope to be there on the 28th, section 210.

Re: Cut back on the "time out" stadium on field commercials.
The PA announcer is Doug Rice who is the head honcho at PRN at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He's a well-known and respected radio broadcaster for over 35 years so this gig is a bit different. We've been friends since 4th grade and he loves AppState! He'll continue to do a good job!AppinATL wrote:I agree but if it does bring in more money for the program, I guess I can deal with it. The sound system was better and I haven't seen this mentioned, but I thought the PA announcer was better too. Not flashy and kind of old school, but he was accurate at least and seemed more on top of things.WXAPP wrote:I don't know about anyone else, but the timeout activity on the field was getting on my nerves a bit. I felt like I was trapped in a TV commercial and there was no mute button; So & so sponsors the oldest fan, etc... It struck me as redirecting the 13th Man enthusiasm and losing the crowds attention to get up and take part. Felt overloaded.
Getting recognized for academic stuff, and money being presented to the university is all good, but some of this other stuff was just too much.
Talked to a friend of mine who covers Clemson, and they have it even worse than we do. Seems to be a trend in collegiate football. I just find it cuts into the fan experience (at least mine) and concentration in the game. Maybe I need ADHD meds or something.. or perhaps I've now crossed into "annoyed at everything" old coot status.
Sound systems was improved...
Dance team and cheer squad were having a tough day too....
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.
