The eternal optimist in me wants to believe Apps keeping this within 1 score is a good pick, but Clemson has so much talent and depth. I actually would not be surprised to see this game go similar to the Ohio St/VaTech game. We keep it close, maybe even take a lead into the 3rd quarter, but then talent, size, speed, athleticism takes over. . .

Black & Gold - 24
Orange & Purple - 38

I hate this pick.

We can't afford to be backed up early. Can't begin our first drive deep in our own territory, get a holding or false start penalty or huge sack and then have to punt. I can see this kind of start that gives them the ball with a very short field and a subsequent very early touchdown. Our only shot is to maintain ball control, eat some clock and mix up our defense and apply pressure. Our depth should help greatly. A big plus is that virtually every player on this roster went to Michigan last year so the team has been in front of a monster crowd. A two score loss would not be bad in my mind but a Virginia Tech (of several years ago) type ass whipping would be hard to swallow. I have to believe that we would stomp Wofferd so that being said:

I'll hold out hope that I'm wrong, but it may hurt like UM last year.

If recent history is any guide, the final score won't be that close. Let's hope we buck that trend and this squad is better suited for such a contest. We will find out soon enough if our increased numbers, depth, and experience are indeed going to allow us to compete.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for I am a Mountain Man. I have the fastest horse, the sharpest knife, and the finest longrifle a Mountian Man can carry. No tiger, eagle, wolf, man or any other of Gods fine creatures will defeat me.

Screw playing just to collect a check. We play with the big boys now. These guys don't believe we belong on the same field as they do.

All that being said, I hope we show up ready to play hard and smart. We have nothing to lose. It will be interesting to see how they play pissed off. Hope we can hang. Won't cover the spread.

Well, since nothing could possibly matter less than whether I get this pick right or not, I'll ignore my head and pick with my heart.

Walter Palmer - 24
Cecil's Cousin - 41

I see Venables stealing a page out of UM playbook from last year and playing lots of bump n run coverage and allow the front 7 to sell out on the run. App's WR's have to get off the jam and get open or it will be a long day in Death Valley. Hopefully SS and co. will utilize motion a bit more to try and help free the WR's up if Venables decides to institute the man press coverage.

moonshine is right, if our receivers cant get off the line, and Clemson shuts them down with one on one coverage, then they will bring 6,7 guys every play, Lamb and the running backs will not have a chance, and this game will get out of hand quickly, got to hit some pass plays early to back the linebackers and free safeties off the line of scrimmage.

We've got the O-Line and Runningbacks to win the time of possession game. I think most of our drives will be reminiscent of our first drive against Howard, long and diligent. That's how we'll keep it close early. Like someone else said, I think this game will go much like the VA Tech vs Ohio State game a few days ago. In the end, Clemson's superior skill will help them pull away in the second half

I believe that we will defer at kickoff, but that means that our defense will have to play lights-out, right from the start. With Howard, we let them gain 68 yards with their first possession. We can't let Clemson do that; they'll put 14 points on the board quick. So, the first quarter is critical for us. If we keep it close, I believe we will only get stronger as the game progresses. But, again, the first quarter is critical to keep it close. If we don't we can lose by a couple of touchdowns, but.................. and I say it's a big "but" if we stay with them the first quarter, we may be able to pull out a tight victory. Go D!!! Go Apps!!!

Since it's frowned upon in this country, we won't be consuming the opposing mascot at the tailgate this Saturday, despite the effectiveness of said strategy on September 5. I will, however, attempt to defend my Big C prediction thread title with another astute prognostication.

The best way to slow down a high powered offense is to keep them off the field. A lot has been made of Clemson's defense but this isn't last years defense. Grinding it out is going to frustrate their offense that can't find a rhythm. We have enough talent to play our game and be successful. I think that if we win the coin toss that we should take the ball to start. I'm not a fan of this but in this case I think we need to take every opportunity to keep their offense off the field.
