2006 for me.
2007 was the year we beat Michigan and rolled the holes from Delaware?

2006 had the best defense, imo

Regardless of what happens in the 2014 game the fact will remain that same that we went into their BIG HOUSE in 2007 and beat their azzes. That can never be taken away......

Just for fun, I took a look at Michigan's all-time record against all opponents. I filtered out the teams that were last played over 50 years ago and came up with the following.

Michigan has an 0-1 record against
Appalachian State (2007)
Arizona State (1986)
BYU (1984)
K State (2013)
Mississippi St (2010)
Oklahoma (1975)
Tennessee (2001)
Texas (2004)

They're 1-2 (0.333) against North Carolina and South Carolina and last played those schools in 1979 and 2006 respectively.

They're 4-6 (0.400) against USC.

They're at 0.500 against
Alabama
Auburn
Florida State
Georgia
Miami (FL)
Missouri
Nebraska
Utah

Of the teams Michigan plays this year, we're the only team against whom they have a losing record. They do play Rutgers this year for the first time.

Of course, none of this says anything about the prospects of an App win in Ann Arbor three weeks from now. It does say that, should we lose this game and never play UM again, some kid fifty years from now doing the same sort of statistics fun that I just did will list Appalachian State in the same bracket with Alabama, Auburn, Florida State ... The best UM can do on the 30th is even their record with us. Kinda makes one giddy for the start of football season :D

As much as I like to see those historical records, the reality is "What have you done for me lately" is really mostly what matters. That is why it is great what we did in 2007 but at this point I would rather pull up my dvr and replay App beating UM in 2014. It is cool to replay the 2007 game but that team no longer represents where we are as a program. The 2011-2013 is a closer representation so I am so ready for our team to make some new history starting Aug. 30. I want them to become relevant as a FBS program now.

Let be honest, it was a bad decision to let him play at Wofford. He wasn't 100% healthy or playing very well, and then he was re-injured which cost us against GSU.

The point I was after is that the 2007 App win is in the books and can't be taken away, I agree with you completely that this year and this UM game are what counts. That's why I'm driving to Ann Arbor in about 498 hours (but who's counting?) I want App to be what I believe App can be at the FBS level ... then I want us to take down my alma mater in the flat part of the state :D

I wish I had the benefit of hindsight for all my important decisions. Life would be so much easier.

Some comments :

"I don't care who Appy St. brings with them to the Big House as they don't have a prayer. THIS ISN'T 2007. This is a cupcake game. Appt St. is a sh*tbag 4-8 team and on our worst day this past season we still beat them. "

"Appy St. finished the season ranked #175 (4-8) against the #183 SOS. They lost to teams like The Citadel, Furman, etc. This is not a good football team. They don't return a good football team. I'm not saying Michigan is a good football team (and they won't have to in order to beat Appy St. by 4+ TDs) but if you erase the name and just look at the facts (IT'S NOT 2007, IT'S 2014), you would laugh at their team and not make yourself look foolish."

"This App. State team would be bludgeoned by last year's Central Michigan team - the same CMU that Michigan beat by 7 touchdowns."

"This game is a joke but I guess there's nothing else to talk about except 2007 and how we over-looked that game and how it was the beginning of the end and blah, blah, blah (and we even get a little video to go along with it). Put me down as officially over-looking this game. This is a big fat W and I'm not even sure why we're playing the game to begin with and hell, I doubt I'll even watch it."

I know that this just riles us up as fans of App State but I sincerely hope that this young team flies into Ann Arbor expecting to be in a dogfight for 4 full quarters. With our coaching staff, I think they will get motivated.
There will always be a few rogue fans like this. We have had our share for sure as well. I remember some posts during the national title years and the couple years after where we had fans calling for 50 point blowouts of some and complaining that we had to play some of our league opponents. Saying they were no match for us.

I can completely understand where UM is coming from. They have underachieved but we all know their team will not overlook us, like last time.

Some things we have to remember about our last game that are no longer different this time around. I think UM is not quite as good as they were that year but neither are we. We don't have Armanti Edwards, Corey Lynch, Kerry Brown, Dexter Jackson, etc. We had a ton of speed at the skill positions and a team loaded with NFL talent. While we have some speed we don't have quite the star power that we did then. We were coming of a national championship season and this year we are coming off a 4-8 year with losses to NC A&T and Charleston Southern.

UM is not the same team and neither are we.

One thing to note from the previous meeting. Anyone remember that first drive? Hart ran right down our throats and the game looked as if we were going to get pounded. We broke a big play for a TD and Hart got injured. We then made a few more big plays and went into halftime with a good lead. There was some luck in our first win and a lot of talent on our team as well. I also must bring up that Jerry Moore got very conservative in the 3rd quarter and you could tell that instead of trying to put the dagger in he just wanted to get out of there with the upset. We almost lost the game because of that because UM dominated us in the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th quarter.

I don't see them beating us by 7 TDs but I'm expecting it to be a 17-20 point game with us losing. I'm more focused on our team just doing our best and I'll be proud if we lose by 3, 40, or win by any amount as long as we play our best game and showed improved fundamentals and technique, as well as coaching, from the 2013 team. I just want to see this team get better weekly. We have a lot of young talent and I expect the team that UM faces will not be the same as the one UL-Lafayette and Idaho will see.

With all that said, I think Scott will have this team improved from last year. I think the new S&C coach is a huge get for us and we will be better in that regard.

kinda look at this like the Georgia game last year, I think we will play them tough the first half, but run out of steam late in the third, and Michigan pulls away, I agree probably 17-20 points, Ill say this, they will try and embarrass us, would not be surprised to see them throwing deep late in the game to try and run up the score.

My theory is that the story of this game will be written in the first quarter. If Michigan is successful at running it down our throats, and we cannot execute, it will be ugly the whole game. If App can come out and execute on offense (even if Michigan is scoring also), we can stay in this game because we can get in their heads, and the early success will help the Apps BELIEVE.

I don't think App has the superstars that we had in 2007, or if we do they are young and yet unproven. I do think we might be deeper and more talented across the board, but that talent is raw so it is impossible to really predict in a season opener.

All I know is that I will be watching and yelling for the Apps, and until it is proven otherwise on the field, I will continue to believe that there is a chance.

The two keys to this as with most games is that the Apps need to at least slow down Michigan's run game, and the Apps need to finish drives rather than settle for field goals. Against UGA, App pretty much controlled the first half but had to settle for field goal atttempts rather than TD's. If the Apps play a turnover free game against Michigan they have a chance. It's amazing the turnovers App had against Michigan in 07 and still prevailed because of key defensive stops.
