I also think UNC is going bowling, they will win vs Mercer and expect them to beat a bad NC State team.

All I can say, based on what I've seen this season, I think we beat Cincy, Boise, and SMU fairly easily and Memphis would be a toss-up but winnable for sure.

I agree, both Boise and Cincy have had very close calls vs below avg teams. Boise has a tough game on Saturday and another potential tough one vs SDSU in conference title game.

I know what’s done is done but I can’t look at these rankings without thinking about where we could be if we hadn’t lost to the stink. Yeah, I like to torture myself.
I'm with ya on this one man... tough to think about still...

We jumped SMU who is above us in the other polls. I consider that a success. We still need a few more years of success to get greater nation wide recognition. If memphis or smu or cincy had beat UNC and USC they would be ranked higher than we currently are. I'm just enjoying the exposure we are getting just by being in all these discussions on national tv.
Actually, SMU wasn't in the CFP rankings last week.

These 3 and 4 loss teams are a joke and would likely be spanked by the G5’s that are ranked.
Do you honestly believe there are five teams not ranked in this poll that are better than, say, Auburn? If so, who?

I am frustrated that USC and Iowa St. jumped us with four losses, but let’s be realistic about saying we’d “spank” or “demolish” either of them. We might beat them, but either are better than anyone we’ve played this year.
Sounds like I upset you for being irrationally exuberant in your eyes. Depends on how you define the "words" like the last impeached president said. thanks for being the hall monitor. I do think the these "lowly" ranked top 25s are given too much benefit of the doubt, my opinion. if you are able place me on ignore because I tend to bleed Black and Gold in my posts.

The biggest joke is that USC and Iowa State are ranked. Not seeing the justification there tbh. I think we can be competitive with 15 or more of the top 25, but our Sunbelt schedule isn't going to allow us to make a move past #20 without help. If we want to make a move, we need to smack Texas State, Troy, and win the Sunbelt Champ handedly at home.

The only reason I see that USC and Iowa State are now ranked is that the committee is trying to build up those respective conferences. I know they are not supposed to do that but nothing else makes sense to me. USC lost to a G5 team (well technically independent but not a P5) and 3 other teams. Iowa State hasn't beaten any team of note and lost to all the tougher teams they have played. It just seems they are going out of their way to try to get some Pac12 teams ranked to justify Oregon and Utah which have collectively beaten nobody with a pulse. I usually don't have viewpoints like this but I really can't understand how they ranked those two. Hell, Texas -A&M has a better record than both at 7-3 and the only losses are to Clemson, Bama and Auburn. How many teams in the nation wouldn't lose to those 3? Not saying that the Aggies deserve a ranking because I don't think they do but they are more deserving than USC and Iowa State. That one really perplexes me. On a good note, Cincy was punished for their poor play of late. I do think Memphis is the class of the G5 teams ahead of us.

You know, I agree that neither deserves to be ranked, but Iowa States resume is pretty solid despite the losses.

A 1 point loss to #17 Iowa.
A 1 point loss to #9 Oklahoma.
A 2 point loss to #14 Baylor
A 7 point loss to #22 Oklahoma State

Only “good” win is over #19 (at the time) Texas.

I guess the committee thought process is something akin to:

If you play Alabama 10 times and lose every single time by a FG, are you a bad team? Or really good, you just have to play Alabama every game?

USC has a horrible resume.

L to unranked BYU.
Crushed by Oregon.
Close loss to ND but even Washington beat them by 2 tds.

I don’t get it.

You mean struggling early vs GA State and Southern and having a dreadful offensive performance at South Carolina? We're good and we've been bailed out by our defense more than once but we are not elite enough to pretend we're world beaters.

I'd love to say we crush the teams directly ahead of us in the polls but I'm not convinced. I think we probably win 6 of the 9 games with teams ranked 15-25.

I think one can fairly say that all the ranked G5 teams appear pretty evenly matched thus far, which the rankings more or less reflect. It’s just unfortunate for us that they put a three-team buffer of “well, we have to find 25 teams *somewhere*” P5s in between App and the AAC/Boise cluster.

It would be real interesting to see that if Cincy and Memphis beat each other will the committee put a 1 loss App team ahead of 2 loss AAC conference champion. If Boise were to lose 1 more App would jump them for sure, just not sure about a 2 loss AAC team.

I sure hope App wins last 2, because if they do it will make for one fun conference championship Saturday.

I could be wrong but I don’t think I am when I say that the committee really seems to try to rank the teams as the stand currently (for the most part). That being said I also don’t believe that they really care about the teams below about 10. I mean seriously is any team from Minnesota down going to get into the top 4? No chance. I really expected us to maybe get to 22 with the teams above us who fell out. Southern Cal might be deserving despite the record. Could we beat them on a neutral field? Who knows but a team like that is who we need as a bowl opponent for sure. I’m just ecstatic of what we have accomplished and for the strides we have made and continue to make as a program. All of us 50+ jokers on this board have seen it all. We all believed before the season started that we could be top 25 worthy and here we are. Let’s just keep enjoying the ride. Keep winning and let the deal play out. After we lost most figured that the dream died but what do you know it didn’t.

Not surprised SMU is now in at 25. The AAC Commissioner did a great deal of whining last week, even trying to throw us under the bus for our home loss vs Stink, as opposed to SMU's loss on the road vs OSU. However, I don't think he was dissing us as much as he was advocating for SMU. I just hate we can't prove ourselves against AAC teams more often because of our bowl tie-ins. We either go undefeated and get the NY6 and play a P5, or play a 2nd or third place MAC or CUSA team, where once again, our opponent's quality will be questioned. Hoping for a win out and end of season ranking, which would be more history and "better than it's been done before."

UL getting the 32nd most votes in the Coach's Poll. I know it's a long shot, but wouldn't it be nice for them to win out and crack the top 25 in the coaches giving us an opportunity to notch a top 25 win on our resume?

Interesting response; but I personally don't consider Cincy, Boise, and SMU the "world." The games I've followed/watched of those three tell me that Cincy is lucky to not have 2 more losses against bad teams. Boise, also could easily have another loss to a, let's say, a not great team. SMU, is similar to Cincy in that they could very easily have 2 more losses to bad teams but escaped with wins. They also barely got by Arkansas State, who most likely isn't even going to win the SBC West and has so far 2 Sun Belt losses.
Also, and I'm no football expert, but I believe the "defense" is considered part of the team so I don't understand that reference at all. In football there are going to be times when all 3 phases are not clicking for various reasons.
