" if not the wheels may come off early."
By that do you mean we'll have 3-4 losses or are you talking more than that?

Agree. We should have good size and speed at receiver. It also looks like UNC is basically replacing their O-Line and with a new quarterback I hope we can dial up some packages to make them uncomfortablet4pizza wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 5:34 pmMy biggest concerns for us in this game, and season, are threefold. One, whether our new fairly inexperienced DL rotation can get consistent pressure in the backfield. and specifically on the QBs. Two, whether our new very inexperienced WR group can make consistent plays (including appropriate blocking). Three, whether our fairly thin in experience (outside the starters) DBs can play up to the standard at App. I really think those 3 position groups will dictate how successful we are against UNC and what kind of season we are going to have. If at least 2 of those 3 groups perform in a consistent manner with what we have come to expect from those position groups then we should beat UNC and have a really good year, if not the wheels may come off early.

I agree on all points and our WR’s have to block. Didn’t Virgil effectively get benched last year for poor blocking?

Re: UNC game discussion
Based on that analysis, our defense needs to stop the run. If we do that, we have an inexperienced QB and inexperienced RB's picking up the blitz. 3rd and long should be our friend.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 4:33 pmBrand new QB..Another Maye in the Hill..never played a down of college FB (do not believe he played at all last year)
Josh Downs is a damn good receiver
Rest of WRs not significant experience
OL should be better than last year with the transfers (horrible last year)
Young RBs but the starter Jones has had some playing time. Freshman RBs will be good in time if not already
DL may be UNC strength with the depth overall...not saying they have all-americans..they finally have depth
LBs may be weakest link on defense
Some experience in secondary but not sold on this area of defense especially if Duck is not fully healthy.
App. St. wins!!!
We also need to win the turnover battle. That's what killed us in all of our losses last year. (But we did win in 3-1 in 2019)
I was confident when we went into Chapel Hill that we were going to pick up the W. After their first possession, we dominated the middle of the game and Drink's conservatism from the mid-point of the 3rd quarter on gave them a chance to upset us. We scored 34 points on them and didn't put points up in the last 17+ minutes.
While we have question marks that don't give me the same confidence, it appears that they were a better team offensively in 2019, Plus, we are starting a senior QB with a great group of RB's against a defense that may be weak at the second level. Maybe it's not as close this time.

Re: UNC game discussion
And if we contain Downs. If App St let's Downs have a field day like WKU receivers, could be difficult game. Personal opinion is we need to get him off timing at line of scrimmage by locking him up. Easier said than done as he is a smaller elusive receiver.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 9:22 pmBased on that analysis, our defense needs to stop the run. Re: UNC game discussion
If I was drawing up a defensive game plan, I let anyone but Downs beat me. Take away option #1 from the young QB and force him into reads. Secondly, I speed up the QB’s internal clock with blitz pressure.
Offensively, I do what we do. Run, run, and run some more. Create eye conflict with personnel groupings and formations. Their DL is good, but the blocking scheme has proven to work against much better lines than what Carolina brings.

Re: UNC game discussion
I wouldn't think money would be an issue for UNC. Just wasn't sure if they'd care enough to bring their band. Some schools care about the band at away games while others don't care at all.
I think most schools bring a condensed version of the band to away games. They're typically not given the same amount of space as they have for a home game, of course cost for some schools, and since they're not performing on the field, there's really no point in a full band.

They could bring a Pep Band to play chamber music while their fans sip their Chardonnay and munch on some Brie./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 7:30 amI wouldn't think money would be an issue for UNC. Re: UNC game discussion
UNC was 98th in defensive efficiency last year (App was 36th). I know Chexmix is a great defensive mind and UNC should improve, but I expect them to improve to match the defense of Louisiana, Marhsal or Liberty, they aren’t going to be SEC good or Clemson good. And Howell WAS their team last year. Without him, they’d have won 2 or 3 games. Is a freshman QB going to match Howell’s level of play? It’s possible I suppose. Our biggest question is replacing receivers, but I think we will be fine there. They’ve had enough game time experience and will have the advantage of the box likely being stacked. I think they will surprise us and make UNC pay.

I met that unc poster at that game in kenan stadium. He was on his phone. This post splains alot. He thought unc won that game. At the time i remember thinking that the only folks paying attention were app fans. This proves it.

Funny regarding their comments on our stadium when they have those disgusting troths in theirs. And I’ve never been more uncomfortable sitting at a stadium than theirs, I’m 5’10 and had zero leg room. Not too mention how subdued their fanbase is at football games. I do bet they have better concessions and cups with ice, though.
