The polls are a joke. I don't see how the ranking (even at the top) are based on this year's performance. Who has done more to date than Auburn? What has Ohio St. done to get more first place votes than Georgia? Who has a better win than LSU's at Texas? Based on this year, how is Wisconsin not higher ranked? I don't care about any of those teams, but.... The polls are a joke.

Some teams are ranked, some teams are rank. Some teams are neither, just hovering between ranked and rank either to rise to one or fall into the other.

But at least this thread is much more entertaining than those where everybody thinks they are a coach and can out coach all our coaches. That is rank.

Glory is given to the first
And pity to the last
But ne'er a word is said to them
Who saw but never passed
The final goal, beheld the prize
But just could not quite attain
Oh tragic ones indeed they are
The neither crowned nor slain.

So ESPN just proved that it’s the style points that count not the win. Palmer moved Clemson to number 2 because they they’re just not as dominant as last year. What the what? With that kind of thinking teams that just win and beat whomever they play will never get ranked.
Not sure that is really fair. Keep in mind I HATE how much influence ESPN has, but nothing I have seen so far this year makes me think Clemson is the best team (by performance) this season.
Right. The Clemson coaching staff has had them peaking at the right times when they won the last 2 of 3 Nattys. Those years they didn't look like Champs until January, even with all that talent. Syracuse and NC State made them look pedestrian in the regular season. Alabama looked like the Death Star last year, until the playoffs. They certainly don't look great yet. There is an art to peaking at the right time. Seems like APP peaked at the right time in our championship years.

Interesting that we gained so many points with the media but stayed basically flat with the coaches.

At a glance, I see several good chances for us to get some help next Saturday while the team gets ready for ULL.

Stuff like that is a big reason why I don't like the top 25 talk. I have 3 reasons.

1. Polls should not even start until after 7-8 weeks anyway for these very reasons.
2. The only poll that matters for a G5 team in a NY6 is the CFP and they are smart by waiting until week 9. Week 8 or 9 is what I would wait for. The AP and Coaches polls don't matter in terms of what bowl we go to.

That is no shock. AP has always been nicer to us in that regard. Media likes us more than the coaches do. It will be interesting when ballots are released to see if we mostly just picked up a 24-25 vote from a lot of new voters or if it is a mix of new voters and some who have been voting us all along now moving us up to say 18-22 range.

I get what you are saying, but that's not actually how the polls work. There are no set number of votes you need. It's possible to be ranked #25 with only 90 votes and it's possible to be #26 with 179 votes. Depends on which teams have the lion share in a given week. It is more important to track spots from being ranked than number of votes. That is more indicative....we went through this last year...when you are 4 spots out you are 1-2 weeks from being ranked with wins. Number of votes dont tell us anything.

Michigan State plays Ohio State so they likely move down but if they win that hurts us. ASU, Virginia, Wake Forest, and Texas A&M all are 20-25 and they don't play. SMU should beat Tulsa but if they lose that helps us but still we have Memphis and California ahead of us. Memphis has a likely win over ULM while Cal has Oregon.

That is not automatic but a chance. We could possibly move up one spot next week heading into Louisiana and then the AP could rank us 25th after if we win, Michigan State indeed loses to Ohio St, and 2 of the following 4 lose- Memphis California, SMU, Oklahoma St, Army.

No shot we are ranked in the coaches poll but could sneak into 26-27 for sure. I would say whenever we are ranked if we keep winning we will be a week behind in the coaches poll but we also have Army, Minnesota, and Baylor ahead there.

Just remember though it is never automatic for us to just move up if a team RV below us beats a ranked team. We simply don't have that top 25 opponent on our schedule to vault. We will just slide up as others lose in an upset or get killed by a top 15 team.

It is a top 25 poll. You are ranked or not ranked. I will never believe you can be 26 in a top 25 poll. We are in fact further from 25 this week than we were last week. And I'm really not trying to be a jerk but I do know how polls work. I can even remember when it was just a top 20 poll.

This is a dumb take. If everybody in the poll is voting for the top 25, the results can and should be extrapolated

I think he is saying the top 25 is what really matters. ESPN does not list you as #35 or #30 next time your name on a broadcast but once you hit 25 you start to get that mark next to your name. A school should definitely note they are receiving votes but nationally the media only recognizes whether you are ranked or not.

In a way you can move past a team but be further from getting in the poll based on the points. However, that just means there is more of a gap and as soon as one of those teams loses you can expect the votes to spread all over several teams instead of just one.

As dumb as my take may be. We are closer to Tulane and Kansas St (with 1 vote) than we are to TAMU and Michigan St. (with 147). So if you want to extrapolate, we are closer to 37 than 25.

Third among others receiving votes. Just as I thought. Not really. I have no idea, but for once I wanted to play the smartest guy in the room.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the polls. App is not ranked, neither is Umass...that doesnt mean they are the same. The top 25 ranking is based on most votes. We are 29th in votes. Yes we are not top 25....we are 29th. You may not process it that way but it is factually so.
