I don't get the fascination with the Australian kickers. It seems more of a fad than anything. Whatever happened to the coffin corner kick? And there was a time when the return guy (on a relatively short punt) put his heels on the 10 and anything over his head he let go. Way too many fair catches at the 5 yard line. Are those sideways kicks just harder to catch? No knock on our punter because he has been given the job but he often has no pressure and still doesn't get the ball 40 yards. I don't mind our higher kickoffs that get returned. Any that you stop before the 25 are a win.

If I was Huff I would run it between the tackles until we prove we can consistently stop them .We have an edge LB playing nose .Great kid , playing hard but he gets moved pretty easily. Can't squander our possessions as they could be hard to come by.
I think we can stop the run or we can stop the big play on pass. The problem is that we don't seem to be able to stop (or even slow down) both. The lack of rushing D became an issue with CCU. Prior to that, it was the big play on pass coverage that was hurting us (ULM) with the exception of one play against Wyoming of course. Wyoming had a strong running game and we shut it down.

I can't say I was a big fan of the "star" D that they implemented against USM but maybe they figured something out in the 4th quarter. I hope so. I believe we have a good chance to beat Marshall. Let's go watch the Apps run the Herd off a cliff!

Our Net punting average is 3.8 yards less than our competition. That has much less of an impact than other areas. If our run defense just 10% better we'd have at least two more wins.

I think USM got cute and maybe Gore got a little winded from so much open field running. 4th and 2 but you don't run Gore? Hell we knew it was coming all night and still didn't stop it.

Maybe we should let Ali run for 200 yards in the first half so he’s too tired to play in the 2nd half.

I have the feeling we won't have to "let" him!

It's not the yardage, it's the situational punting and the lack of returns. Generally, if we are able to pin the opposing offense inside the 15, good things happen. When we punted a 39 yarder against USM, we pinned them at the 12. Two plays later we sacked them at the 1 and forced a fumble that led to an easy TD.

Against ODU, we were tied at 14-14 and went three and out just before halftime. We then managed only a 31 yard punt from our 34 yard line. They moved the ball 35 yards in 45 seconds and kicked the FG as the half expired. With 3:46 left in the game, we could only manage a 37 yard punt and gave them the ball at their 31 for their final drive. We also gave up a 61-yard punt in the second half, because we didn't FC the punt.

The only time we stopped Coastal in the 1st half, we pinned them at the 3 to start the drive (they still gained 45 yards before punting)

ULM, 39 yard punt to the 31 yards line led to a TD. When we punted to their 18 and a touchback (where they took over at their 20), those led to punts. They also punted when they started at their 13 yard line after a kickoff.

Wyoming, we pinned them at the 5 with a 43-yard punt. 4 plays later, we returned an 18 yard INT for a pick 6. We gave up a long punt, because we didn't FC a punt.

With the status of our defense, better situational punting/flipping the field could be the difference.

If I were in charge of the defense (thankfully I'm not), I'd stack the box to stop the run and put pressure on Fancher. If Marshall wins by throwing desperate deep balls, so be it, but don't let them win by running or giving the QB any time. It seems like the secondary can't stop the pass anyway, so why really bother? Just sell out to stop the run and hit the QB.
Marshall's defense is good, but App's offense is better. I don't think they'll have too much trouble scoring, especially if they continue that intermediate passing game they started using in the second half against USM.

I agree, but I don't know if we have the personnel to stop a RB like Ali. Although he's no GWebb RB, so maybe.

Let's be fair, a lot of folks on the board treated him like a very trusted source.

It's GameDay!! Let's Go App. St.!!
Let's Go 1-0 Today!!
Although all games are important, for me personally, this has more importance as I was at App. St. from 93-95. Historically tough games
