Depth

Unread post by hapapp » Sun Sep 02, 2012 2:14 pm

Really concerned that we lost two starters for half season or more in the very first game. Our running game is still trying to establish itself and to lose our "starter" is a big concern. Combining that with the suspensions for the first two games, really taxes our depth.

Like everyone else, I was generally pleased with our performance (minus special team play). JJ was sharp for the most part, the lines seemed to be getting the job done, and the WRs made some big catches. However, we need to see this group play for 60 minutes. No doubt the heat played a huge role yesterday in the later stages of the game. Our success this season will rest with consistent play on our part. We didn't see that yesterday. We will need to bring it for 60 if we are to win on Saturday.

There were certainly more positives than negatives v. ECU. We need to build on those positives and make them a consistent mark of this team.

I agree. I don't think we have the luxury of the redshirt year.

Hell, after watching Alabama's true freshman (don't know name and too lazy to look up), slice and dice Michigan, play the young man.

Who are the suspended players, and what are they suspended for? Jeez, it's wierd how much our programs have in common right now with all the off-the-field crap and what-have-you.

Rod was having a great game until his injury. We need a bigger back (like Rod) to carry the load. I'm still not convinced that Miller or Fergerson are "every down" type backs. May see Holloway on Saturday...the future is NOW!!!

Losing Doug hurts tremendously! Not only is he an excellent DB, but also a great return man. Sumler may fill that role for the remainder of this season. I thought Krah played fairly well for his first game. Was just slightly out of position on the TD fade pass...but stayed with their receivers step-for-step!

Looks like Saturday will be another war! Go APPS!!!

What is the total injury picture at this point? I heard Chisholm was broken hand and Middleton was ankle, possibly broken.

I know we have three suspended for one more game.

Does anyone know specifics on injuries and are there others?

There were three suspended for two games for an unspecified violation of team rules: Jamill Lot (DB), Sean Price (WR), and Jamal Ware (LB). Coach Moore has said they will return to action on September 15th.

My guess - and it is a guess - is that there's much tougher discipline in Mountaineer land this year as well as a returned focus on playing right and working right. In the end all of those will help the program.

Here is latest from WS Journal on injuries.

Running back Rod Chisholm had surgery today to repair a broken bone in his hand. He is expected to be out four to six weeks. Cornerback Doug Middleton, who injured an ankle, was to be evaluated further before a timeframe for his return is announced.

Eight ASU players made their first start: Tight end Drew Bailey (sophomore), receiver Simms McElfresh (redshirt freshman), guard Shaw Counts (redshirt freshman), tackle Regan Dufort (junior), running back Rod Chisholm (senior), defensive end Davante Harris (redshirt freshman), nose tackle Stephen Burns (redshirt freshman) and star Joel Ross (redshirt freshman).

How many of these players actually played in a college game for their first time? That is a lot of inexperience but they did very well.

Depth: noticed ECU's D was rotating in 5-6 on most 3rd downs. A huge luxury with those extra 22 schollies and a big reason we couldn't convert on most of them in the second half.

I have a question on the scholly limits. Are we also limited on the number of players we can dress for the game, or is the 22 scholly difference more about the ability of the back ups? in other words, are both teams limited to say 90 players dressed out, but because we have fewer scholorships we don't have the depth of the backups.

Update: Middleton is done for the season. Guess the coaches can redshirt him for this year. The secondary can ill afford to take anymore hits.

Glass half full is that this team is losing 2 senior DB's so at least some younger guys will get plenty of experience heading into next year when Blackmon and Middleton return.

In the teleconference, which was tough to hear, it sounded like Coach Moore said Lot could be used to replace Middleton against Montana. Did I mishear that?

Someone stated on the Rivals board that the coaches could chose any 2 games in the first four to carry out the suspensions. I'm guessing they didn't have to be consecutive games. Thus, the suspended players could play this week and miss one of the next two games.

I had asked this in the past and recently ran across info. We all know scholly limit is 85/63 for FBS/FCS but that does not restrict dressed players if they are on team without scholly (i.e. walk-on). What I found was each conference limits it travel squad. I don't know how they do it for intra-conference games like this one. I think SoCon travel limit is somewhere in the 50+ range. Most FBS conferences were in the 65 +/- range. Most larger FBS have a 105 limit on total players from what I have seen. Don't know if all of them could play, if needed. I think FCS is in the 95 range.

Here is a link that appears accurate.

The depth chart for the Montana game has been released on goasu.com:

http://www.goasu.com/pdf8/925735.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=21500" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

No mention of Holloway

Just so we're keeping up, here's what our attrition rate looks like since the close of last season:

TE Trevor Sawyer (suspension, out indefinitely) projected starter
LB/DE Langston Tanyi (discipline, dismissed from program) starter
LB/DE John Rizor (discipline, dismissed from program) starter
RB Quarrterrio Morgan (academics, out indefinitely) projected starter
WR Sean Price (two-game suspension) projected starter
DB Jamill Lott (two-game suspension) projected starter
LB Jamal Ware (two-game suspension) projected backup
QB Kalik Barnes (suspension, out for season) projected backup
DB Dante Blackmon (injury, out for season) projected starter
DB/kickoff return Doug Middleton (injury, out for season) starter
RB Rod Chisholm (injury, out 4-6 weeks) starter
LB Justin Wray (injury, out for season) starter

78 that is a tough pill to swallow.

Just looked at the two deep and I'm surprised we are lining up in a 4-2-5 or 3-3-5 vs. Montana. It made sense for ECU, but is Montana now a pass happy team? With those huge olinemen they have I'm concerned about the run.

Need Krah to have a big day at CB2 for us.

Exactly Saint, what I am reading on the Griz board is that their new qb didn't throw a deep ball all day, and maybe they didn't need too, but they feel that the pass is their weakness right now. They love the swing pass but from their last game they were about 80% run and they played a pretty vanilla offensive package. I am sure they will throw in some wrinkles just to keep our guys honest and especially with our lack of dept at CB. If our guys can stop the run I am positive that we will win this game.
