You just had to dive and make a nice trip tackle.... Make me rethink.......yeah I suppose that if Settle played in the Marcus Cox era without injury and with his entourage of linesmen and players he hypothetically could have been the greater player... because he was so talented. But I got to throw Marcus his due credit because he did accomplish. They have their similarities but by same token different style runners. John could run through some guys and had the speed. One could argue he did not go against as stiff of competition but he did play well against some good teams like Clemson but so did Marcus against some P5s.......John did have a good but short NFL career.... too bad due to injury..... and made PRO BOWL. Thing with John as you previously noted less games.....he also didnt see second half in some games because we had game won.NewApp wrote:Settle didn't play as many games.CornCobPipes wrote:CONGRATS!!!! MARCUS......I now have changed my mind and give you credit as the greatest RB to wear the Black and Gold. I use to reserve that claim to Mr John Settle.

That was a great achievement and I was so happy he broke it on the TD. He needs about 300 yards in the last 2 games to get 1000 for 4 years which has never been done at App and is pretty rare.

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
Actually, Cox has played in 1 less game than Settle and 13 less than Richardson. Cox has less carries as well. The only record Marcus won't have is career TD's since he is currently about 14 behind Richardson.NewApp wrote:Settle didn't play as many games.CornCobPipes wrote:CONGRATS!!!! Personally I'm just for retiring the jersey with that player's name on it, never a number. Never has been about the number---It's the one that wears any Appalachian jersey.

I feel like retiring a number should be reserved for a very special situation- even to include accomplishments beyond the college years

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
Personally, I think the best solution is to make #14 into a "Legends" number that captains on offense may choose to wear, along with a patch honoring the person who "wore it best." Michigan and Clemson do this.YesAppCan wrote:Personally I'm just for retiring the jersey with that player's name on it, never a number. That is a cool idea except who wore 14 best? I can't eliminate either one of these guys.SayYesToTheRock wrote:Personally, I think the best solution is to make #14 into a "Legends" number that captains on offense may choose to wear, along with a patch honoring the person who "wore it best." We've had some good ones. Loved watching Chip Hooks and Damon Scott during my days on the mountain.

Why not both? (But if I had to pick one, I'd go with AE.)bcoach wrote:That is a cool idea except who wore 14 best? I can't eliminate either one of these guys.

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
I love Marcus, he's represented Appalachian in the ideal way over the past four years. A great guy that comes from a great family, and an absolutely fantastic player. I'm so so elated for him. I don't want to turn this into a thread where we are comparing two incredible players and two guys who gave their all for Appalachian, but Armanti Edwards was one of those guys we may never have a player as good as him again. What he did was just hard to believe sometimes.bcoach wrote:That is a cool idea except who wore 14 best? But I absolutely agree, we need to do something with the number 14. IDeally a way that pays homage to both of these fantastic players.

If we were to ever retire a number this one should be done. It has been represented well.diehardapp18 wrote:I love Marcus, he's represented Appalachian in the ideal way over the past four years. Re: Cox Breaks the Record
#14 should be retired as soon as possible and have one for Armanti and one for Marcus - I was actually shocked that #14 wasn't retired immediately after AE's APP career was over --- IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE THEN!!! - I have absolutely no problem with them retiring it now with 2 guys - I am totally against assigning it to someone in the future in a "legends" scenario. That would be okay IF we didn't already have the honor of retiring numbers established. Plus assigning it to someone puts an enormous amount of pressure on that young man to "live up to the legend" ---
Hell, Elon retired Scott Riddle's number the very next season --- He broke all the passing records there but could never beat out the APP QB for 1st team all-SoCon - twice to AE and once to DeAndre ---

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
I agree Snaggy, not sure what the protocol is here but they're going to have to "double retire" number 14, one with Edwards and the other with Cox. Also, Cox broke the record with fewer carries than either Settle or Richardson.Snaggy wrote:bcoach wrote:So what do we do with that jersey now that TWO of the greatest have worn it?
Personally, I was sorely disappointed that anyone else was allowed to wear that jersey. It should have immediately been shelved after Armanti's departure. Not sure if there is a waiting period for it to be retired, but AE should have gotten that honor. No question.
Now they're in a situation where two of the greatest in App history have worn the number. It would be an injustice to choose one over the other, just as it is an injustice to not choose either.

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
I like the idea of making #14 a "Legends" number, or something of the sort. I think we're doubled up on 18 different numbers as it is. With a roster in the triple digits, I think it's important to keep the numbers in rotation.

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
Yeah, don't make the mistake Syracuse did with the number 44. It was a recruiting tool and you had to earn the right to wear that Jersey. Jim Brown, Floyd Little, Ernie Davis, Larry Czonka, the list goes on . . . then someone wanted to sell some tickets and retired the number, then unretired it, then retired it again . . . dumb. At this point, App would be better off having a very distinguished ring of honor and just do names imo. Also, good point above about numbers in rotation.

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
But we already have numbers retired - why change now? - every team has duplicate numbers and that shouldn't even be a consideration unless we are looking to retire many more numbers ---
