Dino Hackett, ILB. This guy is what App State is all about. Came here undersized, played like a beast and made it to the NFL. Heart of a warrior.

On top of all that he was recruited from Lenoir HS........quarterback while in high school.DoubleA wrote:Gill Bexk, three time All SOCON, two time Academic All American, top English student, Eggers Award winner, 3.98 cumulative GPA, Duke Law, US Army Major General and judge. Now top that!
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Did not know Gill played QB in high school, before moving to center position at ASU. And did not recall that he was from just down the mountain, in Lenoir.
He was a Senior when I was a freshman, and I remember he was highly respected, both as a player and student. Believe he was in the same class as Robbie Price and Emmett Hamilton.

Out of Brakefield's wishbone, Beck snapped the ball to Price who often handed it to Hamilton. I remember those days, when I fell in love with ASU football, fondly!!! I tell people those were the days when The Rock was a Pebble, one layer of bleacher seating on each side.

I can never answer these questions. I voted for Jerry Moore largely because I couldn't decide between all the players I really like and respect. Armanti Edwards, Corey Lynch, Richie Williams, Kevin Richardson, Scott Satterfield, John Settle, DJ Campbell (family bias
), and the list keeps growing. Fortunately, because this isn't a marital situation where I have to take vows, I never retire an "old" favorite when the new guys come along!

Gill also won the Jacobs Blocking trophy as the best Socon OL if memory serves me correctly. That used to be a pretty prestigious award in those days.

The first time I saw DJ Smith start in 2007, I looked at my buddy (huge Packer fan) and told him DJ would make it to the league. Loved seeing him start and get the green dot. Sucks he got hurt, kid had a nose for the ball. My buddy got his jersey.

Corey Lynch. AE was fantastic, but Lynch was the heart, soul & glue to those championship teams.
I personally always enjoyed watching Sterling Hayward, always thought he could've made it in the bigs. He was Steve smith type before Steve Smith was a type.
Chuck Payne and Matt Stevens. Dexter Coakley, Josh Jeffries, Joey Gibson.
Good lord, I could think of guys all day I think....

As I was leaving the Martinsville race Sunday a Clemson alumni talked to me about the best QB he had ever seen in FCS, Armanti Edwards. He also liked the program and the quality of our fans. I voted for Coach Jerry Moore he is a legend, and a member of the College Football HOF.

I agree with Lynch. Still remember the game in Richmond, KY early in the season when we were about to go down just before the half and Corey ran a back down and knocked him out at about the 2 yard line with no time remaining. I think that we only beat EKU by 7 or so that day. Typical of the type of effort Corey brought to every game. He and Armanti definitely belong in the conversation. I think this game was in 2005 and could have kept us out of the playoffs if we had lost.bigapp wrote:Corey Lynch. AE was fantastic, but Lynch was the heart, soul & glue to those championship teams.

Coakley, Edwards are certainly the best two in the division I era. Settle, Hackett, and Moore would be next.
KRich, Satt, Hunter, and Rico Mack are some of my other favorites.
I don't get the Lynch over AE comments.

I'm most proud that we can have this debate. Imagine this thread on the Cat board.
All-time Favorite...
Kittykat: Well, there's Hoover.
Pussycat: You know who was good? That Brad Hoover fellow. He even played for the Panthers.
Heelcat: Oh, but how does he compare to Hoooooooooooover?
Catnip: I sure am glad Hoooooover wasn't good enough to play at Appalachian.

Re: Who is your all Time asu favorite football alumni or coach
Mine is "other". I had the fortune to play high school ball with Weslan Hunter, App linebacker 97-01, I believe. Remember him knocking the helmet off a Wake Forest guy in one of the wins, which was one of the game highlights, can't remember if it made ESPN or not.
