Recruiting Notebook December 22nd
DB Daniel Thomas of Mobile, AL has set an official visit to USC for January 29th. He's also set with Middle Tennessee January 16th and also wants to visit Georgia Tech and Maryland. He talked Sunday with USC recruiter Travaris Robinson. "He was just checking in on me to see how I'm doing. He said they really wanted me and want me as part of the program." USC is recruiting Thomas as a safety. He said he's looking the hardest at USC but doesn't call the Gamecocks his favorite. He's also hearing from Florida, Michigan and Louisville. Thomas said he'd like to wait until NSD to announce but may have to do it earlier to secure a spot at his school.
Shrine Bowl DB KJ Chamberlain of Emerald, an Appalachian State commitment, heard from USC about two weeks ago after Will Muschamp took over. The Gamecocks were checking to see if he were still interested in them and if he's graduating early. The answers were yes and no. "They told me they had two more safety spots left. They didn't say anything about an offer. I'm still open right now. I'm just being patient and letting things come to me, and if it comes, it comes. It would mean a lot. My family loves Carolina." He has an official visit to Appalachian Set for January 23rd. Chamberlain had 8 interceptions this season giving him 22 over the past two seasons.

Re: Ledford to ECU?
he also must take into consideration the work that must be done compared to ASU. ECU had a bad year by their standards, and one of the weakest units on the team was the OL. From what I have seen, they probably are going to struggle for a year maybe two, while the program at ASU looks strong for the next couple of years. IF he could get alittle bit of a raise, and with what we have coming back next year, I could understand Ledford turning down ECU, and working at App for another year or two, before making the big jump to a P5 school.
Re: Ledford to ECU?
firemoose, you mention possible raises for the staff, any idea how much it would cost to keep Nate Woody for another year or two? I only say this, because it has become obvious he is the most likely assistant coach to leave, if not this year, than next, and I kinda get the feeling, while he likes it in Boone, he sees himself coaching at a top flight P5 school.

Re: Ledford to ECU?
His case is an interesting study. I'm sure that DG is doing his best to give him everything we can. It's no secret that he can make a lot more elsewhere but, especially at P5's, he has to take into account what type of defense they currently play and the players they have in place. As we experienced first hand his defense takes time and pretty smart players to learn. The problem for him is will a program give him time to get his D to the level that we have. P5's (and some G5's) are all about results and are not known for their patience. He has got the players all on the same page here and has the time to bring in new players, test them in spring ball and fall camp to see who picks it up, and shirt those that don't. We've seen plenty of times in the past coaches get hired only to be fired in 3 years or less due to lack of results. No doubt he would eventually build a winning D. But will they give him time and be willing to accept some bad games in the process. Many big schools won't (and just count the number of "fire NW" and "the D sucks" threads and posts we had here).moehler wrote:firemoose, you mention possible raises for the staff, any idea how much it would cost to keep Nate Woody for another year or two? No doubt he can get better athletes at P5's. But that doesn't mean they will be smarter players. And his D takes smart players. He stayed at Wofford for a long time not only because of his ties there to Ayers and the school (plus smart players) but also I have no doubt that he's a smart man and is fully aware of everything mentioned above. That and given his age I feel he will leave only for a position where he believes he can succeed and can stay long term, whether it's as the DC or eventually an HC.
Re: Ledford to ECU?
According to football scoop Ledford has turned down ECU job.
East Carolina: Per source, App State co-offensive coordinator / offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford has turned down the opportunity to join the staff at East Carolina. We hear Middle Tennessee offensive line coach Geep Wade is also high on Scottie Montgomery’s list. Will update…

could be that the NCSU thing is getting some traction...or there are some other opportunities we dont know about? OR does ECU not pay that much?

Re: Ledford to ECU?
on a slightly different note did I hear what I thought I heard yesterday on ESPN radio- the S&C coach for Alabama makes $500K per year? Huh? If so that is some serious scratch and is more than Satt makes?

Re: Ledford to ECU?
He's not going to ECU but is NC State still in play? I would hope that turning down his alma mater is a good sign that he isn't going anywhere.

Have we actually heard anything substantive on State and Ledford?hapapp wrote:He's not going to ECU but is NC State still in play? I would hope that turning down his alma mater is a good sign that he isn't going anywhere.
If there is interest there, I don't think turning down ECU tells us anything, as State is clearly a bigger/higher-paying job. Could be turning them down to stay at App, or could be because he knows he's going to take a better offer.

Re: Ledford to ECU?
One big factor in turning down ECU was likely the fact that they hired an OC a week or so ago.
I will also say that I've heard our staff is very tight and they are all looking to build a special program in Boone. That doesn't mean the right offer won't pull them away, but I think Ledford staying really shows how committed they are to App.

Re: Ledford to ECU?
Here's my perspective on Ledford and the open OLine job at State. While he would get a sizable increase in salary, it might only be a 1 year gig. If Doeren has another 3-5 or worse ACC record he is shown the door. Looking at State's schedule next year and losing their QB, a 5-7 or worse total record is definitely not out of the question. No guarantee Ledford would be kept when a new head coach comes in.hapapp wrote:He's not going to ECU but is NC State still in play? In my opinion, I would have been more worried about Ledford taking the ECU OLine job as he would be coming in with a new head coach and can assume at least 3 years minimum of being there. Jumping to State now with a soon to be lame duck coach doesn't make much sense to me. Now maybe a year from now when a new head coach is hired at State, I could see Ledford making the jump at that time but not now.

Re: Ledford to ECU?
Could be wrong, but I've been under the assumption that ECU offered Ledford the OL coach job, not necessarily OC. Though the rumors were out there before a week ago, so if they did want him for OC or co-OC, they might have predated the hiring anyway.JTApps1 wrote:One big factor in turning down ECU was likely the fact that they hired an OC a week or so ago.

Re: Ledford to ECU?
You're right they did only offer the OL job which is why I was saying that might be one reason why he turned them down. He is OL/Co-Coordinator with us so taking just the OL job at ECU would be a step down for him.EastHallApp wrote:Could be wrong, but I've been under the assumption that ECU offered Ledford the OL coach job, not necessarily OC.
