Scouring the web for App State Info and Updating

How many on here would be willing to scour the web and update/fix/notify web sites of changes to App State?

Wikpedia has dozens of pages on App State or mention App State, mostly athletic related, but also general stuff about the various colleges and such. Then there are non-editable sites that are usually sports related where they need to be asked to change our conference affiliation and NCAA status to FBS.

I was thinking of a Google Docs spreadsheet so we would know where and when changes were made. Some of the SonCon pages have not been updated in a few years. We have a page of Football results. New logos, new Chancellor, new website for sports. Lots of changes the last few years.

I could see the spreadsheet broken down by general ASU pages and then athletics and then each sport. Each record would include

Specific webpage title
specific webpage URL
Status (Needs Revison/Up to date) This could be useful for those that want to help check but don't care to learn how to edit Wikipedia.
Date Revised
Revised by whom

Anything else that would be useful?

This would be a living document to record what has been checked so we don't waste time checking the same page over and over. And as seasons are complete we can add the information or make a wikipedia page as the case may require. We could also have a section for other pages we can't edit but leave a note that the webpage owner has been notified so we are not doing double work here either.

If there is interest I will get something on Google Docs late this evening or tomorrow. This is something that could be done by a pair of people or everyone on the board.

I think this is a great idea. Gonzo had another in setting up Google Alert (in the other thread). I would love to help but my plate is already pretty full. More like overflowing. I have experience with editing Wiki pages and others. Hopefully you can get some involved. If not or if some have some issues I'll try and help as much as I can. One thing about wiki, look at the tabs at the top of the page. If one says "View Source" then it's a locked page and can't be edited. If the tab says "Edit" then, of course, it can be edited. I'll help wherever I can.

Yes, you are doing enough with all the recruiting info. I am just anal enough to care about these sorts of things, and just introverted enough to enjoy doing this without having to interact with others except through a keyboard. I am not sure how much time I will have when school starts back, but this is also not something that needs to be done every day for every App page, most can be checked annually after the first edit is done.

Great idea. Recommend you start by getting the mountaineer logo updated on this website.

I've had several Google alerts set up for at least 8 years. You get good stuff in them, not just about athletics.

I just sent a text message that will hopefully correct the POTR.com mistake.

Here is what I have set up and I added a few webpages to get the process started. I did not have time to edit anything on Wikipedia. Everyone with access to the link can edit.

Even if you don't want to edit or take time to populate all the columns just adding the first two columns would be very helpful.

I have about 45 links at present, with all but about 3 from Wikipedia. Some of these, such 2004 Football season should not have much to have done to them. Pages with numbers, and running tables of annual results may need to have those edited. I hit a few pages and then started opening links. I seemed to have spent most of my time on Football as they have the most pages. If anyone starts working on other sports there may be many pages there, though I am guessing most of the sports will have at most one page and not a page for each year's results.

I am not sure how to sort by a column AND keep the row together as can be done in Excel. It would be nice to sort all the same similar pages together, which is not the case and will not be the even more so going forward.

Anyone with this link can edit. If you don't want to edit any pages but just would like to proof and provide comments on the spreadsheet of what needs to be changed then you can do that as well. Someone else that likes to edit wikipedia can then go in with any edits.

One page/section you might want to keep your eye on is

http://gridironhistory.com/profile/Appa ... State.html

I've worked hard to get as much accurate info as I can, however, with any task that involves the human element, there are bound to be mistakes. The biggest issues I have right now is the data conflict (under the "History Issues" tab).

I haven't put in any bio info for y'all, but that's more of a time constraint issue than anything else.

Same thing for "Appalachian State Championships/Crucial Games won..."

I'll get this in the list now.
Thanks for the heads up.
