I really want to give her the benefit of the doubt and "not judge the book by the cover" but that has to be one of the most dry and unenthusiastic speeches/ statements. Of course she has huge shoes to fill, but talk about a 180 from Peacock. Maybe it was her first time reading off of a teleprompter, but man does she need some practice! It appeared to me as though she took a page out of Alan Atwater's book, if you know what I mean.

I thought for the occasion it was perfectly fine. She is not Peacock but I don't think she should try to be. She will need to put her own stamp on her time as chancellor.

As they used to say in the wild, wild west. "There's a new marshal in town." We'd better get used to the change.

if she learns anything from Peacock, its make yourself available to facility, students and alumi. I think the biggest negative with Browawski was his unwillingness to leave his ivory tower, I will never forget the first home football game, where Peacock showed up, shook hands, and seemed to really enjoyed himself. I don't think it was an accident he is our most popular Chancellor to date, he worked really hard to cultivate a positive relationship with everyone involved with App. My first impressions of Everts is one of quiet reservation, I have no doubt she will a positive influence, and do a great job, but she cant make the same mistake as Browawski, she must reach out to the alumi/students on a daily basis. I hope someone talks to her about the importance of attending as many sporting events as possible, and shake hands, kiss babies and act like a politician up for reelection, I don't know if she is aware of this, but the first home football game is extremely important, for a lot of fans it will be the first time they form an opinion of her, positive, negative, or indifferent, for her sake she needs to be there and put on a good show.

Someone needs to just send her a short email stating this. Nothing long and certainly not accusatory, but just a short note hoping she will continue this sort of public relations in a manner that suits her still yet still has the outreach. Either she reads her own emails or she has an assistant that reads them and forwards as needed.

She likes football and has been in Illinois where her old school is basketball crazy. She gets that. I'm very interested in how she interfaces with faculty and cultivates donors including corporations. We don't need a status quo Chancellor. He'll hire Ken to do the lobbyist work in Raleigh along with targeting key donors. We can use the money that Jerry Moore turned down for the base for Ken.

I had lunch yesterday with a highly influential member of the athletics staff who pretty much spent the whole day with Chancellor Everts on Tuesday. From what I understand, Dr. Everts met with the entire faculty early Tue. morning and drew rave reviews from a group that is usually slow to warm up to any new administrator and both slow and careful with any statements of praise.

It was also my understanding that Dr. Everts stood for several hours at the Jones House reception downtown and greeted everyone in sight with meaningful conversation. The people she met included the Mayor of Boone and four or more town council members, downtown business owners, alumni (both locals and out-of-towners), students and townsfolk. I understand that she had done her homework so well, that she was able to greet the town officials by name and carry on meaningful discussion about current town/university /town & gown initiatives. She was reported to be tuned-in, gracious with her comments and to borrow a cliche--comfortable in her own skin in a totally new setting and situation.

I came away with the impression that Dr. Everts has effective communication with people in her own distinctive way. IMHO, that's the ticket in those situations. Just be "Yosef."

I understand that Chancellor Peacock and Dr. Everts have met extensively over the last several weeks. That leads me to believe that she has had excellent preparation for her new position; having learned directly from her predecessor. I would doubt that she's going to get blind-sided by some smoldering issue hiding beneath the surface or some hot-button issue that's ready to explode.

I saw online that she's already named a Chief of Staff and has her personal staff in place and in gear. One would imagine that she'll be calling a full administrative cabinet meeting very soon--if they haven't already been meeting.

So far, I have a good feeling based on second-hand reports and anecdotal evidence. Time will tell.

Wow, that's great to hear, feeling really good about her. Sounds like her first couple of days has been a total success.

That was my point. Some people have been comparing her to Peacock, and that isn't fair. He was one-of-a-kind. She should be judged on her own merits, and I think she has plenty of positive qualities of her own.

Peacock was great and had his strengths, but Everts has some strengths that probably exceed Peacock; ASU is ready for a bit new blood. Any Chancellor that is in place for 10 years has done most of what they are going to do. New day, new ideas, new directions, new Chancellor.

Oh, and learning how to get around campus and around town.

We have no idea how well she will deal with faculty revolts; campus emergency situations; hiring of quality applicants in key positions like the vacant Chief Human Relations Officer for the university. We don't know how well she can raise money or how well she can handle adversity. Above all, we don't know how successful she'll be in elbowing her way through the UNC Board of Governors to gain approval of new doctoral programs and to get (for the first time in decades) a fair share of state resources to fund construction projects and new professional schools for ASU.

Her jury has nothing to review. It'll take more than nine days on the job to have any clue whatsoever how she'll fit in and how she'll fight her battles. Let's just give her time and support. It's way too early to be making statements about her superiority to Ken Peacock in anything. It's, in fact, unfair to both of them to be making such statements.

I don't think that MountainMan meant to say that there are likely qualities that Dr. Everts has that Peacock did not have, or vice versa.

No, we cannot judge and say that Dr. Everts is a better chancellor than Peacock was, but we also cannot knock her down a few pegs without her having a chance to prove how good she is/could be.

The cold, hard fact is this: Ken Peacock is gone and will not be the Appalachian State University Chancellor once again. He may have some other position with the university one day, but who knows. For now, he is gone, but missed dearly. On that note, we cannot dwell on his loss, but we must look at the good that has come out of what our new chancellor, Dr. Everts, brings to the table.

All-in-all, we need to stop comparing these two people. Dr. Everts is not Ken Peacock and Ken Peacock is not Dr. Everts. They are two completely different people who will handle each facet of life at Appalachian differently. I wish Ken the best with whatever he chooses to do now, but I am now focusing my attention and hopes on Dr. Everts, as she is now our chancellor and the one who will (hopefully) bring Appalachian State to the front of the pack.

I'm guessing the "probably" was used to indicate it was an opinion.

It really is a wasted effort to compare the two.

I will miss, like virtually everyone (Jaime Price notwithstanding), KP. However, I'm ready to throw my support behind Dr. Everts, because she is the head of Appalachian State University now. My support will always be to Appalachian State above any one employee--regardless of how great one employee may be. I think KP would have it no other way.

The jury that looks at what she has done in the past over a rather lengthy academic career, and that has talked to colleagues from her past, and that has met and talked to her directly indeed have SOMETHING to base an OPINION on! No, it's not perfect and it's not magnificent clairvoyance, but it's evidence. And, what part of "probably" do you not understand?

What seems more strange to me than a semi-informed opinion about Dr. Everts (which I think I have) is the uninformed opinion of some of the folks around here that seemed ready to dismiss her based on one short video of one set of comments, or in some cases nothing at all.

ASU will be just fine with Chancellor Everts, and that IS my magnificent clairvoyance -- don't be jealous just because you don't have it. It's sort of like the korvorka, you got it or you don't.

No my fine mountain friend, you completely misinterpreted my point--which is that at the time of your post, Dr. Everts had been chancellor for just less than two weeks. I don't have and don't want a semi-informed opinion of her. I just have high hopes for her. What she accomplished at a different university in another state 1,000 miles from ASU is of no concern to me. I'm only concerned for her work with our university--and my university--in the present and in the future. And we don 't know much about that yet; and we won't know much about it for a while. Comparisons are simply a waste of time and unfair to both Dr. Peacock and Dr. Everts. Give it a rest--and some patience. A year from now, we'll know some real things about her work at ASU.

As for "korvorka," you clearly don't have it since you can't spell it correctly. You must have something else.
