Athletes could (will) miss more class!
ASU faculty asked to adjust/help athletes adjust to SunBelt travel requirements...
http://www2.wataugademocrat.com/News/st ... -id-013757
The varsity sports teams to be affected by the increased travel requirements include men's and women's soccer, volleyball, football, women's softball, men's baseball and women's and men's basketball, Specht said.
(The field hockey team is expected to remain in the NorPac conference, while wrestling is expected to remain in the SoCon because the Sun Belt does not sponsor those sports, ASU Sports Information Director Mike Flynn explained. The other varsity teams' only conference competition is the conference championship, meaning their regular season schedules will maintain similar travel requirements.)
Currently, ASU policy requires that student-athletes do not miss more than 10 percent of the classes for any course, but for those eight teams, "that number is likely to increase," Specht said.
Specht noted in an email that student-athletes at some Sun Belt institutions miss up to 17 percent of some courses.
"Our committee is working with (the) Athletics (Department) to try and minimize the missed classes for athletic travel as much as possible," she said in the emails.
Specht invited faculty members to submit ideas, suggestions and concerns to the subcommittee.
Soooo, this appears to confirm rumors that a new "conference arrangement" is being made for men's soccer. Haven't seen any confirmation that the SunBelt is adding it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
With the exception of men’s soccer, all other Georgia Southern teams will begin Sun Belt play in 2014 and eligible for the conference championship. Since the Sun Belt does not field a men’s soccer program, Georgia Southern is negotiating to find a conference home for the team.

So are we.
Flying to Texas State/UT-Arlington for a weekend would be as much missed class time as driving down to Furman/Samford or UTC/Samford or Citadel/Georgia Southern even Elon/UNCG for a weekend.
For example on a Thursday/Saturday game weekend, you leave Wednesday, maybe going to morning classes and you don't get back til late Saturday/early Sunday. That's not going to change. Travel time will be about the same as some of the longer SoCon road trips, just replace a bus with a plane.

At least for the first year MSOC will stay in the SoCon with wrestling. I was announced right after the Sun Belt.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

I think we all pretty much assumed this would happen....

Which will change again sooner rather than later. Especially when CUSA's TV contract runs out in 2016. Movement could even start before depending on what the P5 finally get. A better picture will develop after recruiting is done.vegattk wrote:I think we all pretty much assumed this would happen....

Let's also hope we can get our basketball program up to snuff before it once again gives us a black mark on our resume...firemoose wrote:Which will change again sooner rather than later. Can't think of a better time to start than a move to a new conference.vegattk wrote:Let's also hope we can get our basketball program up to snuff before it once again gives us a black mark on our resume...firemoose wrote:Which will change again sooner rather than later. Re: Athletes could (will) miss more class!
The sepeartion from the SoCon has been far from rosy ever since they changed the rules regarding football standings in August. It's not surprising that we , along with GSU, would be looking to cut ties with the SoCon. I wonder what impact this could have on the wrestling team?asu66 wrote:ASU faculty asked to adjust/help athletes adjust to SunBelt travel requirements...

Which conference? We've already been rejected by CUSA?firemoose wrote:Can't think of a better time to start than a move to a new conference.vegattk wrote:Let's also hope we can get our basketball program up to snuff before it once again gives us a black mark on our resume...firemoose wrote:Which will change again sooner rather than later. Uh.....The Sun Belt....It's one of the Group of 5 FBS conferences for football and we're moving there on July 1, 2014 for all the sports they support, including basketball. Should I link you a few articles on this move that you've apparently missed. Or maybe you should look at the front page of the Mountaineer Message Board forum (the forum you're on now reading this) and look in the "Other" section. There is a section called "Sun Belt Discussion". Maybe you might want to read a few of those posts.JCline0429 wrote:Which conference? We've already been rejected by CUSA?firemoose wrote:

It sounded like you meant to move to yet another conference, not our already done deal with the Sun Belt.

Sorry but no. Since we're not officially in the Belt until July 1 and we're playing in the SoCon right now that's the new conference I was referring to.JCline0429 wrote:firemoose wrote:Uh.....The Sun Belt....It's one of the Group of 5 FBS conferences for football and we're moving there on July 1, 2014 for all the sports they support, including basketball. bcoach, I fully realize we are not officially in yet, but we are "officially" committed to the Sun Belt. I can't help but wonder if we have already paid our zillion dollar entrance fee.firemoose wrote:Sorry but no.
