Maybe some of you were either taught by her or she directed your grad school. I don't remember her.

"Due to a presidential search process that was less than transparent, candidates to succeed Lefton were never identified as finalists or introduced to students, faculty, staff or the community."

This sounds like our current search for a new chancellor.

I don't know for sure how far they are in the process, but getting a survey about what's important this late in the game is kind of weird. Usually you as the stakeholders what is important fairly soon in the process.

Our head-hunter consulting firm has approached really hot, up-elevator, top-drawer candidates about the position. Those blue-chip candidates don't want their current employers to know that they're even considering leaving for other opportunities; and they don't want the world to know if they get passed over for the position for some other candidate. Campus politics is soooooo down and dirty that this sort of information can be and would be used against them in any and every way possible when power is up for grabs.

When you go the completely open-to-the-public route, you get some good candidates; but you also get candidates crawling out of the woodwork who've been forced out of their positions; or who are on the run trying to stay one step ahead of investigations or scandals; candidates who've been fired outright; and candidates whose contracts are expiring and are not going to be renewed. In other words, a lot of undesirables.

It's unfortunate. but the closed process is the best pathway to the stronger, more desirable candidates.

Absolutely remember. Bev taught a couple classes and often saw her running on River Street. Loved her classes. Of course, I thought the entire department was great, but she was one of my favorites.
